Amsterdam, the Dutch capital, sits in the province of North Holland at roughly 2 metres below sea level. Its temperate maritime climate delivers mild summers and cool winters, with rain spread evenly across all twelve months. The city’s famous canals (165 of them) cover more than 100 kilometres and regulate both drainage and microclimate, keeping summer humidity moderate but winter dampness ever-present.

Amsterdam Weather at a Glance

Amsterdam’s climate (Koppen Cfb) is shaped by the North Sea, 30 kilometres to the west. Winters run 1C to 7C (34F to 45F) with some frost but rarely sustained freezing. The canals freeze over roughly once every 3-5 years, most recently in February 2021. Summers are mild with average July-August highs of 22C (72F); heatwaves above 30C (86F) happen for 3-5 day stretches 2-3 times per summer but are never prolonged. The city receives 838mm of rain annually across roughly 190 days, though most falls as light showers rather than sustained downpours. August is the wettest month (88mm); April is the driest (46mm). Sunlight ranges from 52 hours in December to 216 hours in May.

Seasonal Snapshot

  • Spring (March to May): Tulip season peaks mid-April to early May. Temperatures climb from 10C (50F) in March to 18C (64F) in May. April is the driest month (46mm). King’s Day on April 27 is the city’s biggest street party.
  • Summer (June to August): The warmest and busiest season. Highs average 20-22C (68-72F). Long daylight (sunset after 10 PM in June). Peak tourism in July and August; book museums 4-6 weeks ahead. Brief afternoon rain showers are common.
  • Autumn (September to November): September often feels like a bonus summer month at 19C (66F). October brings autumn foliage and the Amsterdam Dance Event (mid-month). November is the wettest and darkest month alongside December; hotel rates hit annual lows.
  • Winter (December to February): Short days (sunset 4:30 PM), temperatures 1-7C (34-45F). The Amsterdam Light Festival runs late November to mid-January. Lowest hotel rates and thinnest crowds. Occasional canal-freezing events create magical city scenes.
