Valladolid is the Yucatán Peninsula’s best base for Chichén Itzá, sitting 42km from the ruins in a 16th-century colonial town of pastel houses, cenotes, and market food. It has a hot tropical wet-and-dry climate, with highs of 28 to 35°C (82 to 95°F) year-round and a dry season from November to April. This hub collects the seven guides below, covering weather, timing, sights, events, neighborhoods, hotels, and practical travel tips.

Welcome to Valladolid

Valladolid (population about 50,000) is a Pueblo Mágico in the state of Yucatán, founded in 1543 on top of the Maya settlement of Zací. The town centers on Parque Francisco Cantón Rosado and the Iglesia de San Servacio, with the 16th-century Convento de San Bernardino at the north end of the Calzada de los Frailes. Travelers use it as a quiet, affordable alternative to Cancún and Playa del Carmen, staying in colonial boutique hotels and heading out each morning to the ruins and swimming holes that ring the town.

Valladolid Weather at a Glance

Valladolid runs hot all year: average highs climb from 29°C (84°F) in December to 35°C (95°F) in April and May, while overnight lows stay between 17°C (63°F) in winter and 23°C (73°F) in summer. Annual rainfall is about 1,150mm, but it is not spread evenly. February and March see only 25 to 30mm of rain, while June and September bring 160 to 200mm in short afternoon downpours.

The dry season runs November to April and is the most comfortable time to visit, with clear skies and humidity near 70 to 75 percent. The rainy season, May to October, brings heat plus afternoon thunderstorms and humidity above 85 percent, but also the lowest hotel prices and the emptiest cenotes. The month-by-month breakdown, with temperatures and rainfall, is in the Valladolid weather by month guide.

Valladolid by Season

  • Dry season (November to April): highs 29 to 35°C, little rain, busiest and most expensive from December to February.

Where Is Valladolid and What Shapes Its Weather

Valladolid sits in the flat interior of the Yucatán Peninsula, about 160km inland from both Cancún (east) and Mérida (west) and roughly 30km north of the Sultana hills. Being inland means it misses the coast’s cooling sea breeze, so it runs a few degrees hotter than Cancún in the dry season, and its rainfall comes from Caribbean trade-wind thunderstorms rather than coastal fronts. The flat limestone bedrock also means rainwater drains straight into the aquifer, which is why the region is riddled with the cenotes that make Valladolid a swimming destination.
