Puerto Peñasco, also called Rocky Point, is a beach town of about 62,000 people on the northeast shore of the Sea of Cortez in Sonora, Mexico, roughly 100 km (62 mi) south of the Arizona border. It is the closest beach to Phoenix and Tucson, which makes it a weekend staple for American visitors year-round. The climate is hot desert (Köppen BWh) with 300-plus sunny days and only about 86 mm (3.4 in) of rain a year, and the sea ranges from 16°C (61°F) in February to 29°C (84°F) in August.

Welcome to Puerto Peñasco

What began as a shrimp-fishing village has grown into Sonora’s busiest beach destination, but the working harbor still anchors the town. Fishing boats unload each morning at the malecón fish market, oyster farms float in the Morúa estuary, and the El Pinacate volcanic desert sits half an hour to the north. You get a real beach town here, not a manicured resort strip, which is exactly why the same families drive down from Arizona every season.

Puerto Peñasco Weather at a Glance

Puerto Peñasco runs on two seasons rather than four. From November through April the days are mild, with highs of 20 to 26°C (68 to 79°F) and cool nights near 9 to 14°C (48 to 57°F), and this is when the gray whales, fishing tournaments, and the big rallies arrive. From May through October the heat builds to a peak of 35°C (95°F) in July and August, when the sea warms to 29°C (84°F) and a short monsoon brings the year’s only real rain in August and September.

Because it sits on the Gulf of California rather than the open Pacific, the water is warmer than Baja’s Pacific coast and the surf is gentle, which suits families with young kids. The driest months are April, May, and June, when rainfall totals 2 mm or less, and the wettest single month is December at about 15 mm.

Seasonal Snapshot in Puerto Peñasco

  • Summer (June to September): highs of 33 to 35°C (91 to 95°F), a 29°C (84°F) sea, and the lowest hotel prices, with brief monsoon storms in August and September.
  • Fall (October to November): highs of 24 to 29°C (75 to 84°F), warm water still around 26°C (79°F), and the Rocky Point Rally in November.
