San Luis Potosí’s calendar is anchored by the Feria Nacional Potosina in August and the deeply local Procesión del Silencio at Easter, with smaller religious and arts festivals filling the rest of the year. Most events cluster around Plaza de Armas, Plaza del Carmen or the fairgrounds off Avenida Salvador Nava. Here are the named events worth timing a trip around, with dates and what to expect, plus the San Luis Potosí travel guide for everything else.

Events in San Luis Potosí: Feria Nacional Potosina (FENAPO)

  • The Feria Nacional Potosina runs for roughly three weeks in August, usually starting in the first half of the month, on the fairgrounds off Avenida Salvador Nava. It draws big-name Mexican and international acts, plus a rodeo, food pavilions and rides, and it is one of Mexico’s larger state fairs.
  • Concert tickets run from a few hundred pesos for arena shows to over MXN 1,500 for headliner dates; fairground entry itself is modest. Book hotels early, as rates in the San Luis Potosí neighbourhoods near the fairgrounds spike for the duration.

Events in San Luis Potosí: Holy Week and the Procesión del Silencio

  • On Good Friday of Semana Santa, the Procesión del Silencio fills the streets around Plaza del Carmen with hooded penitents, candlelight and drumbeats, one of Mexico’s most solemn and photographed Easter rituals. It starts after dark, and the date moves with Easter (late March or April).
  • Arrive early to claim a spot along the route and expect large domestic crowds plus full hotels, since the city is a major Easter destination. See our best time to visit San Luis Potosí guide for how Easter shifts prices.

Events in San Luis Potosí: Patron Saints and Religious Festivals

  • Fiesta de San Sebastián (January 20) honours the city’s patron in the Barrio de San Sebastián with processions, street food and a small fair, a good reason to visit in the cool dry season.
  • Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe (December 12) draws crowds to the Templo de Guadalupe at the end of the Calzada, with masses, fireworks and food stalls running all evening.

Events in San Luis Potosí: Music, Dance and Literature Festivals

  • The Festival de la Cantera, usually in April or May, spreads classical and popular music across theatres, plazas and the Centro de las Artes, named for the pink stone the city is built from.
  • The Festival Internacional de Danza Contemporánea Lila López brings modern dance companies to the city for about a week each July, based at the Teatro de la Paz and CEART.
  • Letras en San Luis, a literature festival held in May, puts readings and panels in cafes and libraries around the centre. Dates shift year to year, so check the city’s culture office before booking.

Events in San Luis Potosí: Día de Muertos and December

  • For Día de Muertos (November 1 to 2), altars and catrina displays fill Plaza de Armas and the surrounding streets, with families visiting cemeteries after dark; the city is far less crowded than Mexico City or Oaxaca for the same tradition. November is also one of the driest months, so the weather works in your favour, as detailed in our San Luis Potosí weather by month guide.
  • December brings Christmas lights, a tree and seasonal stalls to the main plazas from early December through early January, plus posadas in the old neighbourhoods.
