Puerto Morelos is a small fishing town on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, roughly halfway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and the Mesoamerican reef that runs close to shore is its main draw. The climate is tropical, with daytime highs of 27C to 33C all year and about 1,220 mm (48 in) of rain, most of it falling between May and October. This guide to Puerto Morelos covers the weather and the seasons and links to the full set of planning articles below.

Welcome to Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos started as a fishing and coconut port, and it still runs on that slower rhythm. Federal Highway 307 cuts the town in two: on the east is Puerto Viejo, a few sand streets of beachfront restaurants, dive shops, and a leaning lighthouse at the pier, and on the west is La Colonia, the residential town where locals live and shop. About 30 km (19 mi) south of Cancun and 35 km (22 mi) north of Playa del Carmen, it is the quiet middle option on the Riviera Maya, and the reef sits just 400 m (1,300 ft) from the beach.
