Cozumel is a 48km-long (30-mile) Caribbean island 19km (12 miles) off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, known worldwide as one of the top scuba diving destinations on the planet. Jacques Cousteau put the island on the international map in 1961 when he declared its reefs among the best in the world, and the Arrecifes de Cozumel Marine Park now protects roughly 12,000 hectares (30,000 acres) of coral reef, walls, and drift-diving channels. The island sees roughly 4 million visitors a year, most arriving on cruise ships that dock at three piers in San Miguel, the island’s only town. Away from the cruise piers, Cozumel has Mayan ruins, wild eastern beaches, a 150-year-old ranching festival, and water visibility that routinely exceeds 30 metres (100 feet).

Welcome to Cozumel

Cozumel sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system on Earth after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The reef runs the length of the island’s west coast, creating a sheltered channel of calm, crystal-clear water between the island and the Yucatan mainland. This geography shapes everything about Cozumel: the diving and snorkeling that drew the first tourists in the 1960s remains the island’s defining activity, the west coast’s leeward position creates year-round calm swimming conditions, and the prevailing easterly trade winds pile dramatic surf onto the wild east coast where no one swims. The island’s highest point sits just 15 metres (50 feet) above sea level, so there are no hills to block the breeze from reaching any part of the island.

Cozumel Weather at a Glance

Nighttime lows range from 19°C (66°F) in January to 24°C (76°F) in summer. The island receives about 1,490mm (59 inches) of rain annually, with September (240mm, 16 rainy days) and October (220mm, 15 rainy days) being the wettest months. February and March are the driest, each with only 4 to 5 rainy days. Sea temperatures stay between 26°C (79°F) in winter and 29°C (84°F) in summer.
