Cholula, Puebla, is the oldest continuously inhabited town in Mexico and home to the largest pyramid by volume on Earth, the Great Pyramid of Cholula, topped by a 16th-century church. It sits at 2,150 metres (7,050 ft) on the Puebla plateau, 10 km west of Puebla city and about 110 km from Mexico City, with a mild highland climate, a famously lively zocalo and one of Mexico’s best food scenes in mole poblano and cemitas. This guide covers the weather, the best time to go, what to do and where to stay.
Welcome to Cholula
Most people come for one sight, the Great Pyramid, and end up staying for the pace of the place. The pyramid rises as a grassy hill on the south edge of the centre, capped by the yellow Santuario de Nuestra Senora de los Remedios, and its base of 400 by 400 metres makes it wider than any pyramid in Egypt. Around it, the zocalo and its 46-arch Portales arcade, the 49-domed Capilla Real and the talavera workshops fill a compact, walkable centre that is easy to cover in two days.
Cholula is also a university town, home to UDLAP, which gives it a younger nightlife scene than nearby Puebla and keeps restaurants and bars open late. The town divides into two municipalities, San Pedro and San Andres Cholula, but visitors experience it as one small city with the pyramid and zocalo at the centre.
Cholula Weather at a Glance
Cholula has a temperate highland climate, with daytime highs between 23 C and 28 C in every month of the year and a single rainy season from June to September. Nights are cool year-round because of the altitude, dropping to 4 to 8 C from November to February, so you need a warm layer even in the dry season. Annual rainfall runs 800 to 900 mm, almost all of it falling as afternoon downpours between May and October.
The dry season from November to April is the most popular time to visit, with clear skies and monthly rain of 3 to 20 mm. The full month-by-month numbers are in the children of this guide below.
Cholula Seasonal Snapshot

How Cholula’s Location Shapes Its Weather
Cholula sits on the broad Puebla-Tlaxcala plateau between the Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes to the west and the Sierra Madre Oriental to the east. The altitude of 2,150 metres keeps temperatures mild all year, while the surrounding mountains block most coastal humidity and force the wet season’s afternoon convection. That combination, dry and clear half the year, stormy in the late afternoons the other half, is what makes the November to April window the standout season for travel.
