Ixtapa has a tropical savanna climate (Köppen Aw): a long, bone-dry winter and a hot, stormy summer. The resort sits on Mexico’s Pacific coast in Guerrero state, 240 km northwest of Acapulco, where ocean breezes keep daytime highs between 32 and 34°C (90 to 93°F) every single month of the year. What changes month to month isn’t the temperature, it’s the rain: Ixtapa gets about 1,200 mm (47 in) of rain a year, and almost all of it falls between June and October. Ixtapa Weather by Month: The Dry Season (November to May)
From November through May, Ixtapa averages less than 25 mm of rain a month, and February, March and April often record zero. February is the driest month with under 1 mm. Highs sit at 33°C (91°F) and nights cool to 21°C (70°F), so you won’t need a jacket. This is the stretch when every beach day holds, the water clears for snorkeling at Isla Ixtapa, and humidity drops to its lowest point of the year, around 65 to 70%. The where to stay in Ixtapa guide lists the beachfront hotels that sell out first in this window, and the Ixtapa neighborhoods guide explains which part of the resort gets the calmest water.
Ixtapa Weather by Month: The Rainy Season (June to October)
The wet season turns on in June and peaks in September, when Ixtapa gets 320 mm (12.6 in) of rain, the highest of any month. Rains usually arrive as heavy late-afternoon or evening thunderstorms that last one to three hours, then clear. Mornings stay sunny enough for the beach. August is close behind at 284 mm (11.2 in). This is also Pacific hurricane season: the risk of a named storm is highest from August through October, though direct hits on Ixtapa are rare. If you travel in these months, book a hotel with an indoor bar and plan water activities for before 2 pm. The events and festivals in Ixtapa guide covers the rainy-season events, and the Ixtapa travel tips and FAQ guide has hurricane-season insurance advice.
Ixtapa Weather by Month: Sea Temperature and Swimming
The Pacific off Ixtapa is warm enough to swim in year-round. Sea temperature ranges from 26°C (79°F) in March to 30°C (86°F) in August and September. That’s warmer than the open Pacific to the north because Ixtapa sits in a shallow bay protected by Isla Ixtapa. Surf is bigger during the summer swell (May to October) and calmer, better for kids, from December to April. For a one-page overview of the whole destination, see the Ixtapa travel guide.
