The rain tends to come in heavy morning bursts with afternoon clearing, rather than all-day drizzle. Naha Dragon Boat Festival (Naha Hari) takes place in early May during Golden Week, with teams racing ornately decorated sabani boats in Naha Port.

This is peak rainy season, with sustained humidity that makes 29°C feel like 35°C. Indoor activities like Kokusai Dori shopping arcade and the Prefectural Museum are smart bets. Typhoon activity begins picking up in late June.

July is hot and steamy: high 31.5°C (89°F), low 27.0°C (81°F). Rainfall drops to 161mm over 10 days as the rainy season ends by mid-July. Sea temperature peaks at 29°C, ideal for snorkeling and diving. Humidity at 80%. UV index hits 11+ (extreme), so sunscreen is non-negotiable. The rainy season typically ends between July 10 and 15, after which the summer heat sets in properly. Naminoue Beach is at its best.

August is Naha’s hottest month: high of 31.8°C (89°F), low 26.8°C (80°F). Rainfall is 230mm over 13 days, driven by typhoon-related downpours rather than sustained rain. Sea temperature 29°C. This is peak typhoon season, with an average of two to three typhoons affecting Okinawa in August alone. Flights can be delayed or canceled. The Obon holiday (mid-August) brings another wave of domestic tourists. The Ten Thousand Eisa Dance Parade takes place on Kokusai Dori in early August.

September remains hot but slightly less oppressive: high 30.5°C (87°F), low 25.8°C (78°F). Rainfall is 200mm over 12 days. Sea temperature holds at 29°C. Typhoon risk is still very high through September. Humidity at 78%. Tourism drops off significantly after Obon, so September offers a good balance of warm sea temperatures and smaller crowds, if you are willing to gamble on typhoon disruption. October is one of the best months to visit: high of 27.5°C (82°F), low of 23.5°C (74°F). Rainfall drops to 153mm over 9 days. Sea temperature 27°C, still perfectly swimmable. Humidity falls to 73%. Typhoon risk decreases sharply after mid-October. The Naha Great Tug-of-War takes place during the Naha Matsuri in mid-October, drawing 250,000 spectators to watch 15,000 participants pull a 200-meter rope weighing 40 tons on Highway 58.
Naha Weather in November
November brings autumn proper: high of 24.0°C (75°F), low of 20.0°C (68°F). Rainfall averages 120mm over 9 days. Sea temperature drops to 25°C, still swimmable for many. Humidity at 69%. This is consistently the most pleasant month for outdoor activities: warm enough for beaches, cool enough for hiking, and typhoon risk is near zero. The Shuri Castle Festival in early November features traditional Ryukyu dance and a costumed royal procession.
Naha Weather in December
December is mild: high of 21.0°C (70°F), low of 16.3°C (61°F). Rainfall 105mm over 10 days. Sea temperature 23°C. Humidity 66%. Evenings require a sweater or light jacket. Christmas illumination displays appear along Kokusai Dori and at Palette Kumoji shopping center. New Year is a quiet family holiday in Japan, and many smaller shops and restaurants close December 31 to January 3. Okinawa’s winter whale watching season begins in late December.
