Niseko is a ski resort region on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, built around the slopes of Mt. Annupuri and the shadow of Mt. Yotei. It receives 14 to 15 metres (46 to 49 feet) of snow each winter, more than almost anywhere else on Earth, and turns into a green hiking and rafting destination each summer. Winter highs average -2°C (28°F) in January, summer highs reach 25°C (77°F) in August, and annual precipitation runs about 1,322 mm (52 in). This guide covers the climate, the seasons and the practical details, with seven in-depth articles linked below.

Welcome to Niseko

Niseko sits on the western flank of Mt. Annupuri (1,308 m), facing the Sea of Japan, with Mt. Yotei (1,898 m), a near-perfect volcanic cone, rising to the south. The region is actually four linked ski resorts, Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri, marketed together as Niseko United, plus the towns of Kutchan and Niseko further down the valley. What makes the place special is the snow: cold Siberian air sweeps across the Sea of Japan, picks up moisture, and drops it on the mountains as light powder that holds only about 7% water. That is why the village has grown from a quiet farming area into one of the world’s most visited ski destinations.

The climate is humid continental (Koppen Dfb), which means long, snowy winters and short, mild summers. Ski season runs from late November to early May, with the deepest snowpack in February when the base exceeds 2 metres. Summer, from late June to September, brings highs of 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), no rainy season, and a full calendar of rafting, hiking, cycling and golf. For a full temperature and snowfall breakdown, read the Niseko weather by month guide.

Niseko Seasonal Snapshot

  • Winter (December to February): The main event. Highs of -2°C to 0°C (28°F to 32°F), lows near -11°C (12°F), and 300 to 350 cm (118 to 138 in) of snow each month. Peak powder in January, busiest and most expensive over Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year.
  • Spring (March to May): March still skis deep with highs of 2°C (36°F), April warms to 9°C (48°F) as the snow melts from the village, and May brings cherry blossoms and highs of 16°C (61°F). Fewer crowds and lower prices than mid-winter.
  • Summer (June to August): Green and mild, with highs from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F) and no rainy season. July is the best month for rafting and hiking, August is the warmest and wettest at 160 mm of rain, and both are peak domestic travel months.
  • Autumn (September to November): September cools from summer highs of 20°C (68°F), October peaks with autumn foliage and highs of 14°C (57°F), and November turns cold and quiet with the first significant snow mid-month before the lifts reopen.

Things to Do in Niseko

Niseko is a year-round destination, not just a ski town. In winter you have four connected resorts under one lift pass, plus night skiing in Hirafu and backcountry gates for guided off-piste tours. In summer the Shiribetsu River runs clear for rafting, Mt. Yotei opens for hiking from late June, and the onsens stay hot all year. The things to do in Niseko guide lists the resorts, hot springs, trails and restaurants with prices and opening hours.

Niseko Events and Festivals

The calendar splits between a winter season built around snow and a summer season built around sport and food. The Yukitopia Snow Festival fills Kutchan with snow sculptures in early February, the Niseko Classic cycling race climbs the mountain in mid-July, and the Kutchan potato festival lands in late July. For dates, locations and what to expect, see the Niseko events and festivals guide.

Niseko Neighborhoods

Hirafu is the lively heart with the restaurants and bars, Niseko Village is the self-contained resort zone, Annupuri is quiet and family-friendly, Hanazono is the luxury east side, and Kutchan is the working town where locals live and prices drop. Where you base yourself changes the whole trip, so read the Niseko neighborhoods guide before you book.

Where to Stay in Niseko

Accommodation ranges from hostel bunks in Hirafu to a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Niseko Village, with prices that swing 50% or more between December and February. Ski-in, ski-out access costs more everywhere, and value concentrates in Annupuri and Kutchan. The where to stay in Niseko guide compares the areas and recommends three hotels in each, with booking links.

Niseko Travel Tips

Fly into New Chitose Airport (CTS) and take a direct bus for about 3,500 to 4,500 yen, or catch the JR train via Sapporo to Kutchan. There is no tipping in Japan, tap water is safe, and backcountry skiing requires a guide by law. The Niseko travel tips and FAQ guide answers all the practical questions.
