Aosta Weather by Month: Temperatures, Rainfall and Climate Guide

Italy Valle d’Aosta Aosta

Aosta sits at 583 metres (1,913 feet) in a west-east Alpine valley surrounded by peaks exceeding 4,000 metres, including Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, and Monte Rosa. The city has a humid continental climate (Koppen Dfb) with cold, snowy winters and warm but not hot summers. Its position in a deep valley means temperature inversions are common in winter, trapping cold air in the city while sunny skies prevail above. Annual rainfall totals about 910 mm (36 inches) spread across roughly 118 precipitation days, with May the wettest month and January the driest. Snow falls from November through March, with the heaviest accumulations in January and February.

Aosta Weather in Winter (December to February)

Winter in Aosta runs cold and dry compared to other Alpine cities. Daytime highs hover between 4°C and 7°C (39-45°F) while nights drop to -4°C to -2°C (25-28°F). Cold snaps can push lows below -10°C (14°F), especially during temperature inversions when cold air pools in the valley floor. January averages just 55 mm of precipitation, making it the driest month, but what does fall is almost always snow at city level. The Pila ski area, accessible by a 15-minute cable car ride from the city centre, typically has reliable snow cover from mid-December through late March. December days average only 3 hours of sunshine, rising to 5 by February. Pack thermal base layers, a waterproof winter coat, insulated boots, and sunglasses for the bright Alpine sun on clear days.

Aosta Weather in Spring (March to May)

Spring brings rapid warming and the valley shakes off winter. March starts cool with highs of 12°C (54°F) and nights still around freezing, but by May the thermometer reaches 20°C (68°F) and lows settle at a comfortable 8°C (46°F). This is the wettest season: May receives 110 mm of rain across 13 rain days, the highest monthly total of the year. Snow melts at lower elevations by late March but lingers on peaks well into June. April and May are excellent for hiking lower-elevation trails in Gran Paradiso National Park while the high passes remain snow-covered. Pack layers: a fleece or light down jacket for mornings, a rain shell for afternoon showers, and hiking boots with good grip for muddy trails.

Aosta Weather in Summer (June to August)

Summer is warm but rarely oppressive. July, the hottest month, averages 27°C (81°F) for a daytime high with nights cooling to 14°C (57°F). Humidity stays moderate (typically 50-65%), and afternoon thunderstorms develop on roughly 8 to 11 days per month, usually passing quickly. June and July are the sunniest months with 8 to 9 hours of sunshine daily. August can bring occasional heatwaves pushing temperatures above 32°C (90°F), but the valley’s elevation and surrounding mountains keep extreme heat rare. This is prime season for hiking, climbing, and cycling. Pack shorts and t-shirts for the valley, a warm layer for evenings and higher altitudes, sunscreen (UV index 7-8 in July), and a rain jacket for afternoon storms.

Aosta Weather in Autumn (September to November)

September begins pleasantly with highs of 21°C (70°F) and 6 hours of daily sun, making it one of the best months for outdoor activities. By October temperatures drop to 15°C (59°F) during the day and 5°C (41°F) at night, with precipitation increasing to 90 mm. Larch forests around the valley turn gold in mid-to-late October, creating spectacular foliage against the snowy peaks. November marks the transition to winter: highs of 9°C (48°F), lows near freezing, and 85 mm of precipitation that increasingly falls as snow at city level. Pack a warm jacket, waterproof footwear, and gloves by November. Many mountain refuges and higher-elevation cable cars close from mid-October.
