San Gimignano rises from the Tuscan hills like a medieval Manhattan: 14 stone towers, some dating to the 12th century, punch into the skyline above a perfectly preserved walled town of 7,000 residents. Located in the Val d’Elsa between Florence (55km northeast) and Siena (40km southeast), it’s one of Italy’s most visited hill towns, drawing 3 million people a year to its cobblestone streets, UNESCO-listed towers, and the crisp white Vernaccia wine produced in the vineyards below. Whether you’re climbing the 218 steps of Torre Grossa, photographing the towers at sunrise from the Rocca di Montestaffoli, or eating world-champion gelato in Piazza della Cisterna, this guide covers everything you need to plan your visit.

Welcome to San Gimignano

The town’s story starts in the 3rd century BC as an Etruscan settlement, but its golden age was the 12th and 13th centuries, when rival noble families built ever-taller towers as status symbols, at the peak there were 72. A plague in 1348 halved the population and froze the town in time, which is why it looks today much as it did 700 years ago. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1990. The name comes from Saint Geminianus, a 4th-century bishop of Modena who, according to legend, saved the town from Attila the Hun by appearing in a vision.

San Gimignano Weather at a Glance

At 324 metres (1,063 feet) above sea level, San Gimignano has a Mediterranean climate with continental touches. July is the hottest month at 31C (88F) and the driest with just 25mm of rain. January is the coldest at 9C (48F) by day and 2C (36F) at night. November is the wettest month at 92mm. The town gets 10-11 hours of daily sunshine in summer and 4-5 hours in winter. The hilltop position means steady breezes keep humidity moderate even in August, making it more comfortable than valley-floor cities like Florence.

San Gimignano Seasonal Snapshot

Spring (March to May)

The greenest season: vineyards leaf out, wildflowers cover the hills, and temperatures climb from 14C (57F) in March to a pleasant 22C (72F) in May. The town gets busier from mid-April when tour groups arrive. Cantine Aperte (Open Cellars) happens on the last Sunday of May.

Summer (June to August)

Hot and busy. July peaks at 31C (88F). The Ferie delle Messi medieval festival (third weekend of June) is the year’s biggest event. Visit the towers before 9am or after 5pm to beat the heat and crowds. Stay overnight to experience the town after the day-trippers leave.

Autumn (September to November)

The golden season. September stays warm at 25C (77F) with the Vernaccia Wine Festival. October brings the White Truffle Fair and beautiful light for photography. November is quieter and wetter, with olive harvest underway and excellent hotel deals.

Winter (December to February)

Cold (9-11C/48-52F) but magical: misty mornings, Christmas lights on the towers, and the piazzas nearly to yourself. Hotel prices drop 30-50%. Some restaurants close for annual holidays in January. The town gets a light snow dusting every 2-3 years.
