Bolzano sits in a valley at 262 metres (860 feet) above sea level in northern Italy’s South Tyrol region, surrounded by the Dolomites on three sides. Its climate is continental with Alpine influences: winters are cold with regular snowfall, summers are warm with afternoon thunderstorms, and spring and autumn bring rapid temperature swings. The city receives about 800 mm (31 inches) of precipitation annually, spread across roughly 80 rain days. December through February sees temperatures dip below freezing at night, while July and August can push past 32°C (90°F) on the hottest afternoons. The mountains block most Atlantic moisture, giving Bolzano more sunshine than many Alpine cities, about 1,900 hours per year. For more detail, see our Bolzano travel guide.

Winter in Bolzano is cold but manageable. Daytime highs hover between 5°C and 9°C (41°F to 48°F) while nights drop to -4°C to -1°C (25°F to 30°F). Snowfall occurs regularly, with the valley floor accumulating snow in January and February. The surrounding Dolomites get heavy snow from late November, making this the core ski season for resorts like Carezza (25 km away) and Val Gardena (40 km). January is the driest month with just 25 mm (1.0 in) of precipitation and 4 rain days. Pack thermal layers, a waterproof coat, gloves, and snow boots if visiting December through February. The Christmas Market on Piazza Walther runs from late November to December 23, drawing big crowds despite the cold. For more detail, see our best time to visit Bolzano.
