Novara, the capital of its namesake province, is Piedmont’s second-largest city with 103,238 residents, sitting 45 km west of Milan at 162 metres above sea level. It is a working logistics and rice-trading centre rather than a tourist town, which means short queues and honest prices, plus one genuinely extraordinary sight: the 121-metre dome of the Basilica of San Gaudenzio by Alessandro Antonelli. This guide covers the weather, the best months to visit, and how to plan the trip.

Welcome to Novara

You will likely arrive at Novara FS station and walk ten minutes down Corso Cavour into a historic centre that has barely changed since the 1800s. The first thing to do is climb the dome of San Gaudenzio, then walk the short loop of the Duomo, the Battistero and the Broletto courtyard. The whole centre fits in a compact ring of boulevards, so there is no public transport to figure out. Beyond the walls, the rice paddies start almost immediately, and Lake Orta is a 45-minute drive north.

Novara Weather at a Glance

Novara has a continental Po Valley climate: cold, foggy winters and hot, humid summers. January averages 2.2°C (36°F) and July 23.2°C (74°F), with summer highs around 29°C and winter lows below freezing. Annual rainfall is 796.6 mm across 66 wet days, peaking in May (93.3 mm) and November (112.2 mm). Fog is common from November to February and can slow morning drives to Malpensa.

The practical takeaway: late April to mid-June and September are the best windows, when temperatures sit in the 18 to 24°C range. August is hot and half-empty as locals leave for the coast, while January and February are grey but cheap. Full month-by-month numbers are in the Novara weather by month article.

Seasonal Snapshot

  • Winter (December to February): daily means of 2.2 to 3.9°C, freezing nights and frequent fog; the Festa di San Gaudenzio on 22 January is the highlight.
  • Spring (March to May): warming from 8.4°C in March to 16.8°C in May, with the wettest stretch of the year; Novara Jazz runs late May into June.
  • Summer (June to August): 21 to 23°C means, highs near 29°C, humid with afternoon thunderstorms; the sunniest and busiest season.
  • Autumn (September to November): a mild September at 18.4°C, then November turns wet (112.2 mm) as fog returns; rice and grape harvests make it good for food travel.

Location and Climate Context

Novara sits in the western Po Valley, in a flat agricultural plain between the Ticino and Sesia rivers, 45 km west of Milan and 95 km east of Turin. Its elevation of 162 metres and inland position give it the Po Valley pattern of hot, sticky summers and damp, foggy winters, slightly drier than Milan to the east. The nearby lakes, Orta 30 km north and Maggiore 45 km north, are noticeably milder in spring and autumn, which is why they make such popular day trips.
