The best time to visit Cuneo depends on whether you want mountains, markets or food festivals. May, June and September combine warm days with manageable crowds, while October is the month of the chestnut fair and early winter is for skiers using the city as a base for the Maritime Alps. This is part of our complete Cuneo travel guide, and it breaks the year down by season with specific dates, so you can trade off weather, prices and events rather than guessing.
Best Time to Visit Cuneo: May and June for Warm, Dry Days
Mid-May through late June is the sweet spot for sightseeing. May averages 16.3 °C with highs of 21.7 °C (71 °F), and June climbs to a 21 °C mean with 26.6 °C highs, so you can walk the arcades and sit outside without July crowds. Rain is still possible, 111 mm in May, but it falls as short showers. Hotel rates in this window run below the August peak, and the Tuesday market in Piazza Galimberti is at its liveliest with spring produce. If you want the full month-by-month picture, read our Cuneo weather by month guide first.
Best Time to Visit Cuneo: July and August for Guaranteed Sun
July and August are the driest and sunniest months, with July averaging 28.9 °C highs and August seeing just 48 mm of rain. This is the best time for hiking the Maritime Alps and day trips to the Langhe, but it is also when the city empties out for the coast and the mountains, so some family-run restaurants close for a week or two around Ferragosto (15 August). Expect the highest hotel prices of the year in August and book at least three weeks ahead.
Best Time to Visit Cuneo: October for the Chestnut Fair
If food is the point, aim for the Fiera Nazionale del Marrone, held the third weekend of October (16 to 18 October in 2026) in the historic centre, with free entry and stalls running 9:00 to 23:00 on Friday and Saturday and 9:00 to 21:00 on Sunday. October temperatures average 12.9 °C, ideal for eating roasted chestnuts in the street. Note that October and November are the rainiest stretch of the year at 93 mm and 152 mm, so bring waterproof footwear. Full event details are in our Cuneo events and festivals article.
Best Time to Visit Cuneo: December to March for Snow
Skiers and snowboarders use Cuneo as a cheap base for Limone Piemonte (52 km of slopes, roughly 28 km southeast) and the Mondole Ski area (about 38 km away), with the season running roughly mid-December to late March. In town, IllumiNatale lights up the centre from 6 December to 6 January with markets and an ice rink in Piazza Galimberti. January lows average -1.9 °C, so this is not the month for leisurely outdoor sightseeing, but hotel rates are at their lowest and the snowy old town is at its most atmospheric. For what is open, check our things to do in Cuneo list, and for where to sleep, see where to stay in Cuneo.
Best Time to Visit Cuneo: Months to Avoid
November is the weakest month: it is the wettest at 152 mm, the foggiest, and the quietest for events, with many sights on shorter winter hours. Late July and August can feel hot and half-closed during the Italian holiday exodus. Avoid travelling over the Ferragosto week (around 15 August) if you want the full restaurant scene, and skip the midweek lull of early January if you are relying on museums that close on Mondays. The Cuneo neighbourhoods guide helps you pick a base that suits any of these windows, and our Cuneo travel tips page covers practicalities.
