Portofino is a tiny fishing village turned superyacht harbour on the Ligurian coast of northwest Italy. With just 500 permanent residents, one cobblestone square, and pastel-coloured houses wrapped around a perfect natural harbour, it is one of the most photographed spots on the Italian Riviera. This guide covers Portofino’s Mediterranean climate, the best months to visit, what to do, where to stay, and how to navigate this famously expensive but genuinely beautiful corner of Liguria.

Portofino Weather at a Glance

Portofino has a classic Mediterranean climate: mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers. The Ligurian Sea moderates temperatures year-round. Summer highs average 28C (82F) in July and August, with sea temperatures reaching 25C (77F) in August. Winter highs hover around 10-11C (50-52F), cold enough for a coat but well above freezing. The wettest months are October and November (98-118mm), while July averages just 20mm of rain. Sunshine ranges from 10 hours daily in July to a low of 3 hours in December.

The shoulder seasons are the sweet spots. May and June bring 21-25C (70-77F) temperatures with 7-9 hours of sunshine and moderate rainfall of 40-55mm. September holds on to summer warmth with sea temperatures of 22-24C (72-75F) and air temperatures around 24C (75F), but with half the crowds of August.

Portofino Seasonal Snapshot

  • Spring (March to May): Trails bloom with wildflowers, daytime highs climb from 14C to 21C (57-70F). The Feast of Saint George on April 23 is the year’s biggest local celebration. May delivers the first beach days with sea temperatures reaching 18C (64F).
  • Summer (June to August): Peak season with highs of 25-28C (77-82F) and sea temperatures of 21-25C (70-77F). The Piazzetta buzzes, every hotel is open, and the harbour fills with superyachts. Book everything 3-6 months ahead. August 15 (Ferragosto) is the absolute peak.
  • Autumn (September to November): September is the best-value month with warm sea, pleasant air, and thinning crowds. October brings 20C (68F) highs but rain jumps to 98mm. November is the wettest month (118mm) with many businesses closing for winter.
  • Winter (December to February): Quiet and rainy with highs of 10-11C (50-52F). Roughly half the hotels and restaurants close. Ferries stop running. Sunny winter days offer empty hiking trails and a village to yourself. Christmas lights in the Piazzetta run through early January.

    8. Location and Geography

Portofino sits on a small promontory jutting into the Ligurian Sea, about 35km east of Genoa on the Italian Riviera. The Portofino Promontory is a protected natural park covering 18 square kilometres of Mediterranean scrub, pine forest, and coastal cliffs. The village itself occupies a narrow inlet on the southern side of the peninsula, sheltered from northern winds. The single road in and out (SP227) winds along the coast from Santa Margherita Ligure, 3km to the north. The nearest train station is Santa Margherita Ligure-Portofino on the Genoa-La Spezia line.

The geography shapes Portofino’s weather. The promontory blocks cold northern winds in winter, keeping temperatures milder than inland Liguria. In summer, the sea breeze (il libeccio) provides afternoon relief from the heat. The steep hillsides mean Portofino gets more rainfall than towns further south along the coast, with an annual average of roughly 900mm compared to 600mm in Genoa. This rainfall feeds the dense vegetation of the Natural Park.
