La Spezia sits at the head of the Gulf of Poets, a deep natural harbour on the Ligurian coast roughly halfway between Genoa and Pisa. Most visitors know it as the gateway to the Cinque Terre, but the city itself has a compelling naval history, a walkable historic centre, and a waterfront promenade lined with palm trees and seafood restaurants. The climate is Mediterranean: mild winters (11°C in January), hot summers (28°C in August), and a rainy autumn that peaks in October with 130mm. For detailed month-by-month climate data, see the full weather guide. Whether you are using La Spezia as a base for hiking the Cinque Terre trails or spending a few days exploring the Gulf of Poets by ferry, this guide covers everything you need to plan your trip.

La Spezia Weather at a Glance

La Spezia’s Mediterranean climate means you can visit comfortably from March through November. The city gets about 1,300mm of rain annually, concentrated in autumn (October is the wettest month) and late winter. July is the driest month with just 30mm of rain and 11 hours of daily sunshine. Sea temperatures peak at 25°C in August, making it the best month for swimming in the gulf. Winters are mild, with daytime highs around 11 to 12°C and overnight lows rarely dropping below 3°C. Snow is extremely rare in the city.

La Spezia Seasonal Snapshot

  • Spring (March to May): Warming temperatures from 14°C to 21°C. Ferry services resume in late March. Cinque Terre trails reopen. Moderate rain (70 to 85mm per month). Easter weekend is crowded and expensive. May is an excellent month overall.
  • Summer (June to August): Hot days at 25°C to 28°C. Sea temperatures climb from 21°C to 25°C. July is bone-dry with 4 rainy days. August is peak season: crowded, expensive, and many small shops close for Ferragosto week (August 12 to 18). Book hotels by April for summer dates.
  • Autumn (September to November): September is arguably the best month: 25°C, warm sea, and the crowds vanish after week one. October brings the heaviest rain (130mm). November is the quietest month with reduced ferry schedules and closed trails.
  • Winter (December to February): Cool and wet with daytime highs of 11 to 12°C. The Christmas market runs through December. January and February are the cheapest months for accommodation (3-star rooms from 50 EUR). Ferries stop entirely from November to mid-March.

Where Is La Spezia?

La Spezia is on the Ligurian coast of northwestern Italy, at the eastern end of the Italian Riviera. It is the capital of the province of La Spezia and the second-largest city in Liguria after Genoa. The city sits at the head of a deep, sheltered gulf known as the Gulf of Poets, named for the writers who were drawn here: Byron, Shelley, Petrarch, and DH Lawrence all spent time along these shores. The Apennine mountains rise behind the city, creating a microclimate that is slightly warmer and less windy than the exposed Riviera coastline further west. The Cinque Terre, five UNESCO-listed fishing villages, begin just 8 kilometres northwest of the city centre. Portovenere and the islands of Palmaria, Tino, and Tinetto sit at the western entrance to the gulf, a 30-minute ferry ride from the city docks.

Welcome to La Spezia

If you are heading to the Cinque Terre, you have probably already made the right call by choosing La Spezia as your base. The city is cheaper, less crowded, and better connected than any of the five villages. A train from La Spezia Centrale gets you to Riomaggiore in 8 minutes, and a ferry from the Morin dock takes you to Portovenere in 30 minutes. But stay a day in La Spezia itself before you rush off to the postcard villages. The Technical Naval Museum is one of Italy’s best maritime collections. The San Giorgio Castle delivers a panorama of the entire gulf from its hilltop perch. The covered market at Piazza Cavour is where locals buy focaccia, pesto, and anchovies caught the night before. And the seafood restaurants along the Passeggiata Morin serve plates of spaghetti alle vongole for 14 EUR with a view of the sunset over the water. La Spezia is not just a transit hub. It is a destination in its own right that rewards anyone who gives it more than a rushed morning. For a complete list of things to do in La Spezia, check our dedicated guide.
