Location and Geography of Udine
Udine lies on a flat plain in the middle of Friuli, between the Adriatic Sea to the south and the Julian Alps to the north, and just 60 km from the Slovenian border and 120 km from the Austrian one. This position makes it a natural rail and road junction, and it shapes the climate: the sea sends humid air inland in summer, while the Alps bring cold, sometimes snowy winters. The historic centre grew around a low hill, where the castle now stands, and the Cormor river runs along the city’s western edge. Venice is about two hours south by train, and Trieste an hour southeast.
