Trieste Events and Festivals

Italy β€Ί Friuli-Venezia Giulia β€Ί Trieste

Trieste’s event calendar reflects its position at the crossroads of Italian, Slavic, and Germanic cultures. The city hosts the world’s biggest sailing race, a film festival focused on Eastern European cinema, and a coffee festival celebrating its role as the Mediterranean’s coffee import capital. Here’s what’s on, month by month, with exact dates and locations where available.

Trieste Events and Festivals: Winter (December to February)

Trieste Film Festival (January)

The Trieste Film Festival runs for 9 days in the third week of January and is Italy’s premier showcase for Central and Eastern European cinema. Screenings take place at the Teatro Miela, Politeama Rossetti, and Cinema Ariston. The festival screens about 100 films across feature, documentary, and short film categories, with a focus on countries like Ukraine, Poland, Romania, and the Balkans. Tickets EUR 5 to 8 per screening, festival passes available at EUR 45 for 10 films. Most films screen with English and Italian subtitles. The 2026 edition runs January 16 to 24.

Trieste Christmas Markets (Late November to December 26)

Trieste’s Christmas market fills Piazza Sant’Antonio with wooden huts selling mulled wine (EUR 4), local honey, handmade crafts, and Triestine street food. A second market runs along the waterfront at Molo Audace with a skating rink (EUR 8 including skate rental). The market runs daily from the last weekend of November through December 26, 10:00 to 20:00 (stays open until 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays). The big Christmas tree on Piazza Unita is lit on December 7. The markets have a more Central European feel than other Italian Christmas markets, with Austrian and Slovenian influence in the food and crafts.

Trieste Events and Festivals: Spring (March to May)

Trieste Half Marathon (May)

The Bavisela Half Marathon takes place the first Sunday of May, drawing about 5,000 runners on a flat, fast course that loops from Piazza Unita along the waterfront and through the city center. A 10km family run and a 2.5km non-competitive walk run alongside the main race. Registration EUR 35 for the half marathon (EUR 25 early bird before March). The race expo and bib pickup at the Stazione Marittima runs Friday and Saturday before the race.

Trieste Flower Show (March/April)

The annual Festa dei Fiori fills Piazza Unita and the Molo Audace with flower displays, plant vendors, and garden design exhibitions over a weekend in late March or early April. Free entry. Exact dates vary year to year but typically align with the weekend closest to the spring equinox. A good time to see the city’s squares in full color.

Trieste Events and Festivals: Summer (June to August)

TriesteLovesJazz (July)

This free jazz festival runs for 4 days in mid-July, with open-air concerts on Piazza Unita d’Italia and stages scattered through the city center. The lineup mixes international headliners with Italian jazz artists. All outdoor concerts are free. Evening shows typically start at 21:00 and run until midnight. The 2025 edition featured artists like Dee Dee Bridgewater and Richard Bona. Bring a cushion , the piazza’s stone surface is hard after an hour.

Trieste Estate (June to August)

Trieste Estate (Trieste Summer) is the umbrella branding for the city’s summer cultural program running June through August. It includes open-air theatre performances at the Roman Theatre, classical music concerts at Miramare Castle, and film screenings at the Giardino Pubblico. Events are spread across 35 to 40 different venues. The full program is published in late May on the Comune di Trieste website. Most events are free, ticketed ones range from EUR 5 to 15.

Trieste Events and Festivals: Autumn (September to November)

Barcolana Regatta (Second Sunday of October)

The Barcolana is the world’s largest sailing race, held annually on the second Sunday of October since 1969. Over 2,000 boats of all sizes line up on a single start line stretching 3km across the Gulf of Trieste. The course runs from the Barcola waterfront to Miramare and back, a 15-nautical-mile loop. About 200,000 spectators watch from the shore and the Karst hillsides. The race village sets up on Piazza Unita and along the Rive waterfront in the week leading up to the race, with boat shows, food stalls, and live music each evening. Book accommodation at least 6 months ahead , every hotel and Airbnb in the city sells out. The 2026 edition is October 11.

Trieste Coffee Festival (November)

Trieste handles about 30% of all coffee imported into Italy through its port, and the Trieste Coffee Festival celebrates this heritage over a long weekend in early November. Events include cupping workshops, latte art competitions, roasting demonstrations, and guided tours of the Illy and Hausbrandt roasting facilities. Most events take place at the Magazzino 26 in the Porto Vecchio (Old Port). The 2025 edition ran November 7 to 9. Day pass EUR 15, full weekend pass EUR 35. The festival is a must for coffee enthusiasts , you’ll learn more about espresso in three hours here than in most barista courses.

Trieste Science+Fiction Festival (Late October to Early November)

Held over 5 days at the Politeama Rossetti and Teatro Miela, this festival is Italy’s longest-running science fiction film and literature event (since 1963).
