Cosenza sits in the Crati River valley at 238 metres (780 ft) above sea level, where the Busento and Crati rivers meet and the Sila plateau rises to the east. The city has a Mediterranean climate that runs hot and dry in summer and mild and wet in winter, with annual rainfall of 881 mm (34.7 in) spread across roughly 90 wet days. Snow is rare in the city centre but the Sila mountains, 45 km away, hold ski resorts from December to March. These are the 1971 to 2000 climate normals from the city’s official weather station.

Cosenza Weather by Month: Winter (December to February)

January is the coldest month, with an average high of 11.7°C (53°F) and a low of 3.3°C (38°F), and the city averages about 22 frost days per year, almost all of them between December and February. Rain stays heavy through the season, 120 mm in January and 112 mm in December, so pack a waterproof jacket and an umbrella. Snow in the valley is unusual but does fall on the surrounding Sila peaks, where the Lorica and Camigliatello Silano ski lifts run from December to March. See the best time to visit Cosenza for how the cold months fit into a wider itinerary.

Cosenza Weather by Month: Spring (March to May)

Spring warms quickly: March averages 15.5°C (60°F) by day, April 18.9°C (66°F), and May 24.4°C (76°F). Rainfall tapers off from 93 mm in March to 46 mm in May, making late spring the driest and most comfortable stretch before summer. This is when the Fiera di San Giuseppe fills Viale Mancini in mid-March and the hills around the city turn green, good timing for hiking in the Sila without summer heat.

Cosenza Weather by Month: Summer (June to August)

Summer is hot and dry. July averages 32.8°C (91°F) and August 33.1°C (92°F) by day, with overnight lows only dropping to 18°C (64°F). Rain nearly disappears: 20 mm in June, 13 mm in July and 21 mm in August. The valley traps heat, so afternoons can feel close to 35°C (95°F), and most locals slow down between 1 pm and 4 pm. Plan indoor sights for midday; for a full list of what’s open, see the things to do in Cosenza guide.

Cosenza Weather by Month: Autumn (September to November)

September holds onto summer with a 28.3°C (83°F) average high, but rain returns fast: 47 mm in September, 101 mm in October and 132 mm in November, the wettest month of the year. October is a comfortable 22.9°C (73°F) by day. November turns cool and damp at 16.7°C (62°F), so bring layers and expect short, sharp downpours. The steep lanes stay walkable between showers; read the Cosenza neighborhoods guide to decide where to base yourself.

Cosenza Weather by Month: What to Pack

Pack for warm days and cool nights year-round: the 238-metre valley means evenings drop well below daytime highs even in summer. From October to April bring a waterproof layer and an umbrella, as the city gets most of its 881 mm of annual rain in autumn and winter. July and August need light cotton clothing, sun protection and a hat; you won’t need rain gear. For hotels near the sights see the where to stay in Cosenza guide, and the Cosenza travel tips guide covers getting there from Lamezia Terme airport.
