Taranto, the “City of Two Seas,” occupies a unique position on the Ionian coast of Puglia between the Mar Grande and Mar Piccolo. Founded by Spartan colonists in 706 BC as one of the most powerful cities of Magna Graecia, today’s Taranto is a working port city of roughly 190,000 people with a remarkable archaeological museum, a medieval old town on its own island, and some of Italy’s best mussels. The city has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers (highs of 31 degrees Celsius in July and August) and mild, wetter winters (highs of 13 degrees Celsius in January). The sea is swimmable from June through early October, peaking at 26 degrees Celsius in August.

Welcome to Taranto

Unlike Puglia’s polished tourist towns, Taranto is authentic, lived-in, and ungentrified. The Borgo Antico island holds 3,000 years of history in its narrow alleys, from the surviving columns of a 6th-century BC Doric temple to the 15th-century Aragonese Castle. The MARTA archaeological museum houses one of Italy’s finest collections of Greek gold and terracotta. The city’s two seas, the Mar Grande and Mar Piccolo, shape daily life: the Mar Piccolo’s sheltered lagoon produces the sweet mussels (cozze tarantine) that define the local cuisine, while the Mar Grande’s Lungomare promenade is the city’s social spine at sunset. Taranto does not try to charm you with postcard perfection; it earns your respect through depth, history, and the best seafood meal you will eat in Puglia for half the price of Lecce or Ostuni.

Where to Stay in Taranto

Most visitors will find the best balance of convenience and comfort in the Borgo Nuovo, Taranto’s commercial center with wide boulevards, the main shopping street (Via di Palma), and a 5 to 10-minute walk to the old town island. The Lungomare seafront promenade has hotels with sea views and easy access to the evening passeggiata. For atmosphere and authenticity, the Borgo Antico island offers B&Bs in converted palazzetti surrounded by 3,000 years of history, but streets are narrow and there are no large hotels. Beach-focused visitors should look south toward Lido Azzurro and Leporano, roughly 15 minutes by car from the center. For area-by-area details, see the where to stay in Taranto guide.

Location and Geography

Taranto sits on the Ionian coast of the Salento peninsula in the Apulia (Puglia) region of southern Italy. The city occupies a peninsula and an island between the Mar Grande (Big Sea, the open Ionian) and the Mar Piccolo (Little Sea, a sheltered inland lagoon). The Borgo Antico sits on the island, connected to the mainland by two bridges: the Ponte Girevole (swing bridge) to the north and the Ponte di Porta Napoli to the south. The Mar Piccolo’s unique geography, a nearly enclosed basin with freshwater springs, creates the brackish conditions that produce Taranto’s famous mussels. To the south, the Cheradi Islands (San Pietro and San Paolo) sit in the Mar Grande, roughly 6 km offshore. The climate is shaped by the surrounding water, which moderates winter cold and summer heat while adding humidity year-round.
