L’Aquila Weather by Month

Italy Abruzzo L’Aquila

L’Aquila sits at 721 metres (2,365 feet) in the Apennine Mountains of central Italy, giving it a continental mountain climate with cold, snowy winters and warm but rarely hot summers. The city’s elevation means temperatures run 5-7°C cooler than Rome (just 100 km southwest) in every season, and winter snow is a regular occurrence from December through March. Annual precipitation averages 700-750 mm (27-30 inches), spread fairly evenly across the year with slight peaks in autumn and spring. The Adriatic Sea lies 90 km to the east but has minimal moderating effect because the Gran Sasso massif (2,912 m) blocks maritime air from reaching the Aterno Valley. The table below gives you month-by-month averages: daily high and low temperatures in Celsius and Fahrenheit, total rainfall, average humidity, and daylight hours. The data comes from the L’Aquila weather station (Preturo, ICAO: LIAP) and represents 30-year normals. For a deeper dive into what each season means for travel planning, see our {{best-time}}. L’Aquila Weather by Month: Winter (December to February)

Winter in L’Aquila is cold, with daytime highs of 6-8°C (43-46°F) and overnight lows dropping below freezing to -1°C (30°F). Snow falls on 8-12 days per season, with accumulations of 15-30 cm (6-12 inches) during heavier storms. The surrounding Gran Sasso mountains get far more, and the ski resort at Campo Imperatore (2,130 m, accessed from Fonte Cerreto, 25 km northeast) operates reliably from December through March. January is the coldest month; February is slightly milder but still brings snow. Daytime sun provides 3-4 hours of brightness, so the city can feel quite grey. Pack a heavy coat, waterproof boots, and layers. Restaurants and bars in the centro storico stay cosy with fireplaces and hearty Abruzzese dishes like arrosticini (grilled lamb skewers). See our L’Aquila events calendar.

L’Aquila Weather by Month: Spring (March to May)

March starts chilly with highs around 11°C (52°F) and lingering snow possible in the first half. By April, temperatures climb to 14°C (57°F) and the mountain slopes turn green. May is the sweet spot: highs of 19°C (66°F), lows of 9°C (48°F), 7 hours of daily sunshine, and rainfall that drops off toward month’s end. Late May is when the outdoor terraces open up and the city’s university students flood the piazzas. Spring rainfall averages 55-65 mm per month across 9-10 rain days, so pack a light rain jacket. The wildflowers in the Gran Sasso National Park peak in late May and early June, making this the best window for hiking at lower elevations (below 1,800 m, where trails are snow-free). See our L’Aquila neighborhoods guide.

L’Aquila Weather by Month: Summer (June to August)

Summer is the driest and sunniest season but never oppressively hot thanks to the elevation. July and August both average 27°C (81°F) for highs and 15°C (59°F) for lows, with 9-10 hours of sunshine daily. Rainfall drops to just 40-45 mm over 5-6 rain days per month, mostly from brief afternoon thunderstorms that clear quickly. Humidity sits around 55-60%, making even warm days feel comfortable. Nights cool down enough that you’ll want a light sweater after sunset. This is the best window for hiking the Gran Sasso, climbing Corno Grande (2,912 m, the highest peak in the Apennines), and exploring the Campo Imperatore plateau. Book mountain rifugi (huts) in advance for July and August weekends; they fill with Italian families escaping coastal heat. The nearby Tirino River offers kayaking and swimming in crystal-clear water at a constant 10-12°C. See our where to stay in L’Aquila guide.

L’Aquila Weather by Month: Autumn (September to November)

September starts warm at 22°C (72°F) but cools noticeably by month’s end. October is proper autumn: highs of 17°C (63°F), lows of 8°C (46°F), and the heaviest rain of the year at 75 mm over 9 days. The beech forests around the Gran Sasso turn gold and red, and October weekends draw photographers and hikers to the Campo Imperatore area. November is the wettest month (80 mm over 10 days) and signals winter’s arrival, with temperatures dropping to 11°C (52°F) highs and 4°C (39°F) lows. Snow can arrive by mid-November at higher elevations. Pack waterproof gear and warm mid-layers. This is truffle season in Abruzzo, and local sagre (food festivals) celebrate chestnuts, porcini mushrooms, and new olive oil throughout October and November. See our L’Aquila travel tips guide.
