Dehradun sits in the Doon Valley at roughly 450m (1,480 ft) between the Shivalik Hills and the Mussoorie range, so its weather is milder than the Delhi plains but warmer than the hill stations above it. The city receives about 2,050mm of rain a year, almost all of it in the June to September monsoon, plus a dry pre-monsoon summer and a cool, often foggy winter. This is the full Dehradun weather by month breakdown, with real numbers for temperature, rainfall, and humidity.

Dehradun Weather by Month: January to March

January is the coldest month, with average highs of 20°C (68°F) and lows dipping to 5°C (41°F). Thick valley fog is common in the mornings and can delay the 05:50 Shatabdi Express to New Delhi. Rainfall is light at about 47mm. February warms to 23°C (73°F) highs and 8°C (46°F) lows with clearer skies, and it’s one of the better months for a Mussoorie day trip. March reaches 28°C (82°F) by day. Holi falls in March, and the city’s biggest fair, the Jhanda Mela at Guru Ram Rai Darbar, starts shortly after. Dehradun Weather by Month: April to June

April averages 33°C (91°F) highs and 17°C (63°F) lows, and it marks the start of the tourist rush up to Mussoorie and the hill stations. May is the hottest month at 36°C (97°F) by day and 21°C (70°F) at night, but rainfall is still low at about 55mm, so it stays dry. June holds near 35°C (95°F) while humidity climbs ahead of the monsoon, and rain jumps to about 230mm. Pack a light cotton wardrobe and carry water if you’re out between 12:00 and 16:00 in these months.

Dehradun Weather by Month: July to September

July is the wettest month, averaging 525mm to 630mm of rain with highs around 31°C (88°F). August is the second-wettest at about 560mm with highs of 30°C (86°F), and September eases to roughly 260mm as the monsoon retreats. The Mussoorie road can close for short stretches after heavy rain because of landslides, so check conditions before heading north. This is the season to keep an umbrella and waterproof shoes with you, and to book stays with a dry indoor lobby. Many travelers pair a valley visit with our things to do in Dehradun list, since indoor sites like the Forest Research Institute museum stay open regardless of rain.

October is one of the best months, with 29°C (84°F) highs, cool nights around 16°C (61°F), and only about 60mm of rain. Post-monsoon skies are clear, which makes it ideal for day trips. November drops to 25°C (77°F) highs and 10°C (50°F) lows and is the driest month at roughly 10mm. December brings 21°C (70°F) days and 6°C (43°F) nights, and winter fog returns to the valley floor.
