Bhubaneswar is the capital of Odisha and the starting point for most visits to the state’s temples and coast. Its climate is tropical and marked by a hot dry summer, a heavy monsoon and a short mild winter, and its 700-plus temples have earned it the name Temple City of India. The guide below splits the city into focused sections, from monthly weather to where to stay.

Welcome to Bhubaneswar

The city works best as a base: spend a day walking the Old Town temples, a morning at the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves, and an afternoon at Dhauli or Nandankanan zoo, then use the train to reach Puri’s beach and the Konark Sun Temple 60 km away. December and January are the most comfortable months to do all of this on foot.

Bhubaneswar Weather at a Glance

Bhubaneswar averages 1,658 mm of rain a year and a mean temperature of 27.4°C. April and May are the hottest months, with highs of 38°C to 44°C, while December and January are the coolest, with mornings near 16°C and afternoons around 28°C. The monsoon runs June to October, with August the wettest month at 375 mm. The full month-by-month data is covered in the weather guide linked below.

Unlike coastal Puri, Bhubaneswar sits about 30 km inland, so it misses the sea breeze and feels hotter in summer. It also sits in the path of Bay of Bengal depressions from October to December, which can bring sudden heavy rain even outside the main monsoon.

Bhubaneswar Seasonal Snapshot

  • Winter (November to February): highs 27°C to 31°C, lows 15°C to 19°C, almost no rain, the best season for temple walking.
  • Summer (March to May): highs 35°C to 44°C, occasional thunderstorms, very few visitors and the lowest hotel prices.
  • Monsoon (June to October): highs around 32°C, 1,400 mm of rain concentrated here, high humidity and green countryside.
  • Festival season (December to January): Konark Dance Festival, Mukteshwar Dance Festival and Ekamra Utsav.

Location and What Shapes the Weather

Bhubaneswar sits on the Mahanadi delta plain of eastern India, about 30 km inland from the Bay of Bengal and 440 km southwest of Kolkata. Its tropical climate comes from its latitude (20.3°N) and the southwest monsoon that sweeps in from the bay each June. The nearby Chilika Lake, Asia’s largest brackish lagoon, lies 70 km south and is a popular day trip.

The city is the gateway to Odisha’s Golden Triangle of Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark. Puri, 60 km south, holds the Jagannath Temple and a wide beach, while Konark, another 35 km from Puri, is home to the 13th-century Sun Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
