The best time to visit Srinagar depends on what you want from the trip. April to June delivers tulips, mild temperatures, and every attraction open. October brings clear skies and autumn colour. December to February suits travellers who want snow, empty gardens, and hotel rates cut by a third or more. This page is part of the complete Srinagar guide.
Best Time to Visit Srinagar: The Short Answer
Visit between April and June for the best overall balance of weather, scenery, and open attractions, or in October and early November for crisp air and golden chinar leaves. January and February are the cheapest and quietest months, and are the right choice if you specifically want snow on the ground and a shikara ride across a frost-rimmed Dal Lake. Before you book, check the month-by-month numbers in the Srinagar weather by month guide.
Best Time to Visit Srinagar for Tulips: Late March to April
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, the largest in Asia at 30 hectares, opens in the last week of March and holds full bloom for roughly three to four weeks into late April. This is the busiest and most expensive window of the year. Book hotels and houseboats two to three months ahead, and reserve a morning entry slot, since the garden is at its best before 11:00 before the tour buses arrive. The garden is one of the top stops in our things to do in Srinagar list.
Best Time to Visit Srinagar for Pleasant Weather: April to June
April to June combines warm days of 20 to 29Β°C (68 to 84Β°F) with cool nights of 8 to 15Β°C (46 to 59Β°F). June is the warmest comfortable month and the peak of the domestic season, when travellers from the plains flood in to escape 40Β°C-plus heat. Expect the highest hotel prices and the fullest houseboats in June, and book well ahead using the where to stay in Srinagar guide.
Best Time to Visit Srinagar for Fewer Crowds and Lower Prices: November to February
From November to February, hotel and houseboat rates fall by 30 to 50 percent and the city empties out. You trade warmth for solitude, and in January you may get snow. Many smaller shops and some garden cafes close or shorten their hours in the coldest weeks, so confirm opening times for specific gardens and restaurants before setting out. Use the Srinagar neighborhoods guide to choose a district that stays lively in winter.
Worst Time to Visit Srinagar: What to Avoid
Late June to mid-August brings the most frequent rain and, in July, the Amarnath Yatra traffic along the highway corridors to Pahalgam and Sonamarg. If you are on a tight schedule, avoid these routes during that window. The yatra and other seasonal events are listed in the Srinagar festivals and events calendar. Otherwise there is no bad month to visit.
Best Time to Visit Srinagar for Specific Activities
Skiers and snowboarders should aim for December to March, when the Gulmarg gondola and its off-piste terrain are running. Trekkers and mountaineers do best from June to September, when the high passes are snow-free. Shikara rides and garden visits are most comfortable from April to October. For the autumn chinar colour and the clearest photography light, plan for mid-October to early November. For the logistics of reaching the mountains, read the Srinagar travel tips page.
