Location and Climate Context

Ahmedabad sits at 23°N latitude in the plains of Gujarat, about 53m (174ft) above sea level. The city is roughly 100km inland from the Arabian Sea and 500km north of Mumbai. Its hot semi-arid climate (Köppen BSh) results from its position in the rain shadow of the Western Ghats , the mountain range blocks much of the monsoon moisture before it reaches Gujarat, giving Ahmedabad about half the annual rainfall of Mumbai despite being at a similar latitude.
