Iceland has a subarctic oceanic climate, milder than its latitude suggests due to the Gulf Stream but famously unpredictable. Reykjavik averages 0°C in January and 11°C in July, with weather that can shift from sun to rain to wind in a single afternoon. Summer (June to August) brings the midnight sun with nearly 24 hours of daylight, ideal for road trips on the Ring Road and hiking in the Highlands. Winter (November to March) offers 4-5 hours of daylight and the best northern lights viewing, though storms can close roads. Rain is possible year-round, with the south coast receiving more precipitation than the drier north. The highland interior (F-roads) is only accessible from late June to early September. Swimming in geothermal pools is a year-round activity: the water stays at 36-40°C regardless of outside temperature.
