Marseille Weather by Month

France › Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur › Marseille

Marseille has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate with mild, sunny winters and hot, dry summers. France’s second-largest city receives 515mm of rain annually, concentrated in autumn and winter, with July averaging just 9mm. The city benefits from 2,800 sunshine hours per year, making it one of France’s sunniest cities. The infamous Mistral wind blows 90 to 100 days annually, bringing cold, dry northerly gusts of 60 to 90 km/h, most common in winter and spring.

Marseille Weather by Month: Temperature, Rainfall, and Sunshine

Climate data below reflects 30-year averages from Marseille Provence Airport (MRS), 27 km northwest of the center. Marseille’s coastal position on the Gulf of Lion and its amphitheater-like setting in limestone hills create microclimates within the city: the Vieux Port can be wind-sheltered while the Corniche Kennedy promenade is getting blasted by the Mistral. Sea temperatures come from the Frioul archipelago monitoring station.

Marseille Weather in January and February: Mild Winter, Mistral Wind

January brings daytime highs of 12°C (54°F) and nighttime lows of 4°C (39°F) with 47mm of rain across roughly 6 days. February is marginally drier at 30mm and a degree warmer. These are the peak Mistral months: expect cold northerly winds gusting to 70 to 90 km/h on roughly 10 to 12 days each month, making the temperature feel 5°C to 8°C colder than the thermometer reads. When the Mistral blows, the sky turns a brilliant, cloudless blue. The calanques (limestone fjords between Marseille and Cassis) are hikeable in winter when summer’s heat would make them dangerous. The Vieux Port fish market operates year-round at the Quai des Belges each morning. Accommodation prices are at their annual low: 4-star hotels average EUR 100 to 140 in January versus EUR 180 to 260 in July. For best time to visit Marseille, winter’s the budget pick but not the beach pick.

Marseille Weather in March and April: Spring Warmth Arrives

March reaches 16°C (61°F) with 235 hours of sunshine and only 30mm of rain, making it drier than most European cities in spring. April warms to 19°C (66°F) but rain increases to 52mm over 6 to 7 days. The Mistral still blows on roughly 8 to 10 days in March but recedes through April. This is prime hiking season in the Calanques National Park: temperatures are perfect for the 3-hour coastal trail from Callelongue to Marseilleveyre. The sea remains cold at 13 to 14°C (55 to 57°F), so beach days are for sunbathing only. Outdoor terraces along the Vieux Port reopen their full seating by late March. The spring festival season kicks off with the Festival du Jasette in April.

Marseille Weather in May and June: The Sweet Spot

May delivers 23°C (73°F), 296 sunshine hours, and 38mm of rain. The sea warms to 17°C (63°F), swimmable for the hardy. June is spectacular: 27°C (81°F), 332 sunshine hours, and only 21mm of rain (roughly 3 rainy days). The Mistral drops to minimal levels. These are Marseille’s best months: the beaches of the Corniche and the Prado are warm enough for sunbathing, the calanques are hikeable without heat stroke, and the Vieux Port’s evening bustle runs past midnight under clear skies. UV index reaches 8 in June; sunscreen and a hat are essential for midday sightseeing in the exposed Vieux Port area. Hotel prices begin climbing in May but don’t peak until July. Book the Frioul archipelago boat trip (EUR 11 return) early as summer queues build by late May. For a full attractions list, see things to do in Marseille.

Marseille Weather in July and August: Hot, Dry, Crowded

July is Marseille’s hottest and driest month: 30°C (86°F) highs, 20°C (68°F) nighttime lows, and only 9mm of rain across 1 to 2 days. August is nearly identical at 29°C (84°F) with slightly more rain at 26mm. Sea temperatures peak at 23 to 24°C (73 to 75°F), perfect for swimming. These are the busiest and most expensive months: the Vieux Port is shoulder-to-shoulder, the Calanques National Park restricts access (reservations required for Sugiton calanque via the Calanques app from late June to early September), and hotel prices are at their annual maximum. Air conditioning is standard in 4-star hotels but not guaranteed in 3-star or lower. Marseille’s summer heat can feel oppressive on the exposed Quai du Port and around the Panier district’s narrow, wind-sheltered streets. Start sightseeing before 10:00am, take a long lunch indoors or at a shaded terrace, and resume after 4:00pm. The Friday morning Marché du Prado (Prado market) near the beach is a summer highlight for fresh produce and prepared foods to take to the Plage du Prado.

Marseille Weather in September and October: Golden Autumn, Then Rain

September is still summer-warm at 25°C (77°F) with 262 sunshine hours and a warm sea at 22°C (72°F). But rain spikes to 78mm, often delivered in heavy Mediterranean downpours lasting 2 to 4 hours rather than all-day drizzle. October drops to 20°C (68°F) with another 78mm of rain and the Mistral begins returning. The tourist crowds thin dramatically after the first week of September, and hotel prices drop 20 to 30% from August peaks. The sea remains swimmable at 19°C (66°F) through early October. Late September and October bring Marseille’s best cultural season, including the Fiesta des Suds world music festival at the Dock des Suds. This is also the start of Provence’s olive harvest, and the Marché des Capucins (Marseille’s main produce market in the Noailles district) fills with fresh-pressed olive oil.

Marseille Weather in November and December: Mild Winter Returns

November drops to 15°C (59°F) with 58mm of rain and 148 hours of sunshine, roughly half the June peak. The Mistral is back in force on 8 to 10 days. December brings 12°C (54°F) with 46mm of rain. The Christmas market on the Vieux Port (late November to early January, roughly 40 chalets) brings festive energy to the waterfront. The Santons fair (traditional Provençal clay figurines) runs from mid-November to December on the Canebière. Winter is the season for bouillabaisse in a heated Vieux Port restaurant and for visiting the MuCEM and other museums without queues. Sea temperature is 15°C (59°F), too cold for most swimmers. The calanques remain open for hiking and the winter light on the limestone cliffs is spectacular, but check wind forecasts before heading out as the Mistral can make exposed trails dangerous. Marseille Seasonal Packing Recommendations

Summer (June to August): lightweight cotton or linen, sunscreen (SPF 50 recommended for the calanques where limestone reflects UV), wide-brimmed hat, swimwear, water bottle. Winter (December to February): medium-weight jacket, windbreaker for Mistral days, scarf, layers. Spring and autumn: layered clothing, a windproof layer for Mistral days, comfortable walking shoes for the calanques. Year-round: the Mistral can surprise you in any season, so a packable windbreaker is worth carrying even in July.
