Deauville is an upscale seaside resort on the Cote Fleurie of Normandy, France, about 200km northwest of Paris and facing the English Channel. Founded in the 1860s by the Duke of Morny, it grew into a playground for Parisian high society, and it still trades on horse racing, casinos, cinema and a 2km sand beach. The climate is oceanic and mild: July averages 18°C (64°F), August brings the warmest sea at 18°C (64°F), and about 707mm of rain falls across the year. This Deauville guide covers the weather, the seasons and where to stay, with links to seven in-depth articles below.

Welcome to Deauville

Deauville sits on the western edge of Calvados, in Normandy, where the Touques river meets the Channel. Its twin town, Trouville-sur-Mer, lies immediately across the river, and the two make up one continuous resort area with Deauville as the polished, expensive half and Trouville as the older fishing port. The town is compact: the casino, the beach, the marina and the racecourse all sit within a 20-minute walk of each other.

Three things define Deauville. First, horse racing: the Deauville-La Touques racecourse runs flat meetings from April to October, and the August yearling sales are Europe’s most important thoroughbred auction. Second, cinema: the Deauville American Film Festival has run every September since 1975 and draws Hollywood to the boardwalk. Third, the sea: a wide beach, a 660m wooden boardwalk called Les Planches, and a mild but rarely hot Channel climate.

Deauville Weather at a Glance

Deauville has a maritime climate with no real extremes. Winters are cool and damp rather than cold, with January highs of 8°C (46°F) and lows of 3°C (37°F). Summers are mild: July and August average highs of 22°C (72°F) and overnight lows around 13 to 14°C (55 to 57°F). Snow is rare, and frost is occasional.

Rainfall totals about 707mm a year and falls in every month, but it arrives as frequent light showers rather than long downpours. The driest months are April (46mm) and July (47mm); the wettest are November (85mm) and December (80mm). Sunshine peaks at 8 hours a day in June and July and drops to 2 hours in December and January.

The sea is the main climate constraint. The Channel warms slowly and only reaches 18°C (64°F) in August, so swimming is a late-July-to-September activity for most people. The full month-by-month figures are in the Deauville weather by month guide linked below.
