Caen is the capital of the Calvados department and the historic heart of Lower Normandy, about 15 km (9 miles) inland from the English Channel and two hours from Paris by train. The city was William the Conqueror’s seat of power in the 11th century, and its castle and twin abbeys survive alongside a thriving university town of about 105,000 residents. Today Caen is best known as the gateway to the D-Day landing beaches and the Mémorial de Caen, and it has a mild oceanic climate with rain in every month and summer highs around 23°C (73°F). This guide covers the weather, the best time to visit, the top things to do, the main neighborhoods and the best hotels in Caen.

Welcome to Caen

Caen is a city of two stories. The first is medieval: William the Conqueror built his castle here around 1060 and founded the Abbaye aux Hommes and Abbaye aux Dames, both of which still stand. The second is modern and sobering: the city was heavily bombed in 1944 during the Battle of Normandy, and the Mémorial de Caen tells that story in detail. In between, you get a compact, walkable centre, a lively student population and a riverfront that runs north toward the sea. It is not a beach resort, but it is the most useful base in Normandy for the landing beaches, Bayeux and Mont Saint-Michel.

Caen Weather at a Glance

Caen has a temperate oceanic climate (Köppen Cfb). Winters are mild and damp, with January averaging a high of 9°C (48°F) and a low of 3°C (37°F), and summers are warm rather than hot, with July and August both averaging highs of 23°C (73°F) and lows of 13°C (55°F). Annual rainfall is about 733 mm spread over roughly 126 rainy days, so there is no dry season, and December is the wettest month at 78 mm.

Sunshine totals about 1,650 hours a year, peaking at around 215 hours in June and July and bottoming out near 60 hours in December. Snow is rare, falling on only 5 to 10 days a year and rarely settling. Because the city sits a short way inland, it avoids the strongest coastal winds but still feels the Atlantic’s changeable weather, so pack for showers in any season. Full month-by-month numbers are in the Caen Weather by Month guide below.
