Tours sits at the heart of the Loire Valley, 240 km southwest of Paris, and serves as the most practical base for exploring the region’s Renaissance châteaux. The city of 140,000 has a compact medieval old town centered on Place Plumereau, an excellent food scene anchored by the Les Halles covered market, and a TGV connection that puts you in central Paris in 55 minutes. The Loire and Cher rivers meet here, moderating the climate and creating a microclimate that is noticeably drier and sunnier than points further west in the valley. Tours does not get the overnight fame of Paris or the South of France, but it offers a walkable, affordable, and culturally rich alternative that works equally well for a 3-day châteaux sprint or a 2-week slow-travel base. For month-by-month climate data, start with our Tours weather by month guide.

Welcome to Tours

Tours was briefly the capital of France in the 15th century under Louis XI, a period that left the city with a remarkable concentration of Gothic and early Renaissance architecture. The Cathédrale Saint-Gatien, built over 350 years between the 13th and 16th centuries, contains some of the finest medieval stained glass in France, its 200 square meters of windows flooding the choir with kaleidoscopic light. Place Plumereau, the postcard heart of the old town, is a triangular cobblestone square encircled by 15th-century half-timbered houses whose upper floors cantilever over the street, their carved wooden figures and mullioned windows looking much as they did 500 years ago. The Basilique Saint-Martin marks the tomb of Saint Martin, the city’s 4th-century patron saint whose shrine made Tours one of the major pilgrimage stops of medieval Europe. The city wears its history lightly: you can walk from the cathedral to the river in 15 minutes, stopping for a glass of Vouvray at a sidewalk cafe, and never feel you are ticking boxes on a checklist.

Climate Overview

Tours has an oceanic climate (Köppen Cfb) modified by its inland position at the confluence of the Loire and Cher rivers. Winters are cool and damp rather than cold, with January averaging 4.7°C (40.5°F) and snowfall limited to 2 to 3 light dustings per year. Summers are warm and pleasant, with July reaching an average of 20.3°C (68.5°F) and heatwaves pushing temperatures above 35°C (95°F) for short stretches. Rainfall is evenly distributed throughout the year at around 695mm annually, with slight peaks in May (66mm) and October (62mm). The city records about 1,800 hours of sunshine per year, peaking at 240 hours in July. Spring frost is a risk for the surrounding vineyards through mid-April. The prevailing westerly winds mean weather systems arrive from the Atlantic and typically clear within 24 to 36 hours, so extended periods of grey are less common here than further north in Normandy or Brittany.

Seasonal Snapshot

  • Spring (March to May): Gardens bloom, daylight stretches past 9 PM by late May, and the tourist season begins without peak summer crowds. May is the wettest month (66mm) but also one of the most beautiful, with Villandry’s Renaissance gardens at peak form. Vitiloire wine fair in late May is a major draw.
  • Summer (June to August): Warmest and driest season with July averaging 25°C (77°F) and only 7 rain days. Long days (sunset after 21:30) maximize sightseeing time. This is peak French holiday season; book hotels 2 to 3 months ahead and visit châteaux in the morning to avoid tour bus crowds. The Loire à Vélo cycling path and outdoor guinguette festivals are in full swing.
  • Autumn (September to November): September is arguably the best month with summer-like weather (21.4°C / 71°F) and the grape harvest underway. Autumn foliage peaks in October around the Loire Valley forests. November is grey and wet but hotel rates hit their annual floor.
  • Winter (December to February): Cool, damp, and grey with temperatures averaging 4.7°C (40.5°F). The Christmas market animates the old town from late November to December 24. January and February are the cheapest months for hotels, and major châteaux like Chenonceau and Chambord remain open year-round (reduced hours). Museum visits and food-focused itineraries work best in winter.

Location and Climate Context

Tours occupies a strategic position in the middle Loire Valley, at the point where the Cher River flows into the Loire. The city lies at 47°23’N latitude, roughly level with Quebec City, but the maritime influence of the Atlantic (200 km to the west) keeps the climate far milder than that latitude would suggest. The surrounding Touraine region is a gently undulating plateau of limestone and clay soils, drained by the Loire, Cher, Indre, and Vienne rivers. This geology produced the tuffeau limestone that built the region’s châteaux and the distinctive terroir of the Touraine wine appellations. The Loire itself, France’s longest river at 1,006 km, is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site along the 280 km stretch between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes, which includes Tours and its surrounding châteaux. The river moderates local temperatures and creates the morning mists that are a signature of autumn and winter in the valley.
