Chartres is small enough that most visitors see only two areas, the cathedral quarter and the lower town, but the city has a few distinct neighborhoods worth knowing before you book. Where you base yourself changes the pace of your stay and how far you walk with luggage from the station. This guide maps each area, its character and typical hotel prices, alongside our where to stay in Chartres recommendations and the wider Chartres guide.

Chartres Neighborhoods: The Main Areas

The Cathedral Quarter (Haute Ville)

The upper town clusters around the cathedral on its hilltop. Its spine is rue du Cloรฎtre Notre-Dame, which runs past the north portal and the Fine Arts Museum, and it opens onto Place des ร‰pars, the main square for cafes and the Christmas market. This is the most convenient area for sightseeing, with the cathedral, crypt and tower all within a few minutes on foot. It suits first-time visitors and anyone on a short stay, and hotels here are the priciest, typically 100 to 180 euros a night for a 4-star room. It is at its liveliest during the best time to visit Chartres months of summer.

The Lower Town (Basse Ville)

The lower town hugs the Eure river below the cathedral, reached by the stepped Tertres de la Poissonnerie. It holds the densest run of half-timbered houses in Chartres on rue du Bourg and rue de la Poissonnerie, plus the Pont Bouju and the old wash houses. Restaurants and small shops line the water. It suits couples and photographers who want atmosphere over convenience, and it is about a 10-minute walk uphill to the cathedral. Many of the things to do in Chartres are reached by walking down through here.

The Station District

Around Gare de Chartres and Place Pierre Sรฉmard, this flat district is the most practical base for day-trippers arriving by train, since the cathedral is a 10-minute walk up Avenue Jehan de Beauce. It is also where several chain hotels sit, keeping prices lower, around 70 to 120 euros a night. It suits travellers using Chartres as a base for Paris or Maintenon day trips and anyone who does not want to drag bags uphill. Summer evenings here are mild, with highs around 24.9C (77F), as our Chartres weather by month data shows.

Beaulieu and the Southern Suburbs

South of the centre, Beaulieu and Les Clos are residential areas of 20th-century housing blocks and quiet streets. There is little for tourists here, but a handful of budget chain hotels and the Chartrexpo convention centre sit on the southern edge. If you are driving, this is where you will find the easiest parking. It is quietest outside the Chartres events and festivals calendar, and our Chartres travel tips page covers parking and buses to reach it.
