Events and Festivals in Saint-Malo: Spring
Etonnants Voyageurs (late May/early June)
France’s premier international literature and travel-writing festival takes over Intra-Muros for three days, typically the weekend after the Cannes Film Festival in late May. Founded in 1990, it draws 60,000 visitors and 200+ authors from 40 countries to venues including the Palais du Grand Large convention centre and the Theatre Chateaubriand. Events include author panels, film screenings, book signings, and a large book fair. Most sessions are in French with some English-language programming. Fete de la Bretagne / Gouel Breizh (mid-May)
A week-long celebration of Breton culture around May 19 (Saint Yves Day, Brittany’s patron saint). Saint-Malo hosts fest-noz (traditional Breton dance nights), bagad (Breton pipe band) performances, and food stalls serving galettes-saucisses (buckwheat sausage wraps, €3 to 4) in the old town squares. Fete de la Musique (June 21)
The nationwide summer solstice music festival fills every square, bar, and street corner in Intra-Muros with free live performances. Genres range from Breton folk to jazz, rock, and electronic. The atmosphere peaks around 21:00 to 23:00 when the ramparts provide natural amphitheatre acoustics. All performances are free and the streets stay busy past midnight. Bastille Day Fireworks (July 14)
The national holiday brings a fireworks display launched from a barge in the bay, visible from the ramparts, Plage du Sillon, and the Parame seafront. The show starts around 23:00 and lasts 20 to 25 minutes. Thousands gather on the ramparts. Arrive by 22:00 to claim a spot with an unobstructed view. The fireworks are preceded by a bal des pompiers (firefighters’ ball) at the Saint-Malo fire station, a French tradition with dancing and drinks. Route du Rock (mid-August)
One of France’s major indie and alternative music festivals, held over three days at the Fort de Saint-Pere, 12km from Saint-Malo (shuttle buses run from the train station). Founded in 1991, the lineup spans indie rock, electronic, and post-punk. Past headliners include Portishead, PJ Harvey, and The Cure. Three-day passes cost approximately €130; day tickets approximately €50. Camping is available on-site. European Heritage Days (mid-September)
The Journees Europeennes du Patrimoine, held the third weekend of September, opens normally closed historic sites across the city for free. In Saint-Malo, this typically includes the Hotel de Ville (city hall), the Tour Bidouane (a 15th-century tower), and private mansions within Intra-Muros. Quai des Bulles (late October)
France’s second-largest comic book and graphic novel festival (after Angouleme) takes over the Palais du Grand Large convention centre for three days in late October. Founded in 1981, it attracts 30,000 visitors and features author signings, exhibitions, film screenings, and an awards ceremony. Day tickets cost €8 to 10. The festival has a strong maritime and adventure theme reflecting Saint-Malo’s identity. Many events are family-friendly with dedicated kids’ workshops.
Events and Festivals in Saint-Malo: Winter
Christmas Market (December)
The Marche de Noel runs from early December through Christmas Eve, with wooden chalets set up around the Esplanade Saint-Vincent and the Place Chateaubriand. Vendors sell Breton crafts, mulled wine (vin chaud, €3), and local food products including salted butter caramel and far breton (prune custard cake). An ice-skating rink is set up on the Esplanade in some years. The atmosphere is modest compared to Strasbourg or Colmar but authentically local.
New Year’s Eve (December 31)
The Reveillon de la Saint-Sylvestre brings a midnight fireworks display over the harbour, visible from the ramparts and the Quai Duguay-Trouin. Several restaurants Intra-Muros offer set New Year’s Eve menus (€60 to 120 per person), but reservations are essential by early December. The fireworks are a 10-minute display, smaller than the Bastille Day show but with a more intimate, local feel.
