Cologne’s event calendar is dominated by Carnival (Karneval), the “fifth season” that consumes the city from November 11 through Ash Wednesday. Beyond Carnival, the city runs one of Germany’s best Christmas market scenes, a spectacular Rhine fireworks display, and major trade fairs at Koelnmesse that shape hotel availability. Here’s the full annual calendar with dates, locations, and practical advice.
Cologne Carnival (Kölner Karneval)
The Carnival season officially opens on November 11 at 11:11 AM at Heumarkt in the Altstadt, though this is just a ceremonial start. The main events occur in the six days before Ash Wednesday (February or March depending on Easter). Women’s Carnival Day (Weiberfastnacht) on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday (known as Altweiber) is when women cut men’s ties and the street party begins at 11:11 AM on Heumarkt.
The biggest day is Rose Monday (Rosenmontag) when the 7km parade with 12,000 participants and elaborate satirical floats starts at 10:30 AM from Chlodwigplatz. The carnival ends at midnight on Ash Wednesday. Book accommodation 6-12 months in advance. Hotels in the city center charge 3-5x normal rates. Wear a costume (you’ll stand out awkwardly without one).
The Zülpicher Straße area around the university is the student party zone. For weather during February Carnival, temperatures average 5-8°C (41-46°F) with frequent rain – layer your costume over thermal clothing. Our Cologne weather by month guide has February climate data.
Cologne Christmas Markets
From approximately November 24 through December 23, seven main Christmas markets operate across the city. The largest is the Cathedral Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt am Dom) on Roncalliplatz directly beside the Cathedral, with 150+ stalls beneath a giant Christmas tree. The Old Town Market (Heumarkt and Alter Markt) has an ice rink and is more focused on food and drink.
The Harbour Market (Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt) at the Chocolate Museum waterfront has a maritime theme. The Angels Market (Markt der Engel) on Neumarkt is the city’s oldest market with white-themed decorations. All markets open daily 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM (Friday-Saturday until 10:00 PM).
Entry is free. Glühwein costs EUR 4-5 with a EUR 3-4 cup deposit. The markets close by December 23, so plan accordingly. December weather averages 6°C (44°F) with 18 rain days and only 1 hour of daily sun – waterproof shoes and warm layers are critical.
Cologne Lights (Kölner Lichter)
Held on a Saturday in mid-July, this Rhine fireworks display draws up to 1 million spectators along both riverbanks. The main fireworks are launched from a flotilla of boats on the river synchronized to music broadcast by local radio. The best viewing is from the Hohenzollern Bridge and the Rheinpark on the east bank (Deutz side).
The event starts with afternoon music from 3:00 PM, fireworks at approximately 10:30 PM (it needs to be dark). Food and drink stalls line the riverbanks. Public transport is packed after the event. The event is free but crowded; arrive by 6:00 PM to claim a good spot.
Some river cruise companies sell on-the-water viewing tickets (EUR 100-200). For summer climate context, see our best time to visit Cologne guide.
Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Cologne
Held the first weekend of July, Cologne’s Pride parade is one of Germany’s largest LGBTQ+ events with over 1 million attendees. The parade starts at noon on Sunday from the Deutz side of the Rhine, crossing the bridge to the Altstadt and finishing at Heumarkt with a street festival. The weekend includes parties, cultural events
the street festival on Heumarkt and Alter Markt Friday through Sunday. The parade is free to watch. Cologne’s large LGBTQ+ community makes this one of the most welcoming Pride events in Europe.
Major Trade Fairs at Koelnmesse
Koelnmesse, on the Deutz side of the Rhine (accessible via the Hohenzollern Bridge or a 2-minute train from the Hauptbahnhof), hosts major international trade fairs that affect hotel availability citywide. Anuga (food and beverage, October in odd-numbered years), ISM (sweets and confectionery, January/February), gamescom (video games, August), and Art Cologne (contemporary art, November) are the biggest.
During these fairs, hotel rates can triple and availability disappears. Check the Koelnmesse calendar at koelnmesse.com before booking any trip. For accommodation strategies during fair dates, see our where to stay in Cologne guide.
