Beijing stretches across 16,410 square kilometers, but the central city is divided into six ring roads with distinct neighborhoods inside the 5th Ring Road.
Each area has its own character, price range, and practical advantages. This guide covers the six neighborhoods most relevant to travelers.
Beijing Neighborhoods for Travelers
Dongcheng District: The Imperial Core
Dongcheng is Beijing’s historic heart, containing the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Wangfujing shopping street, and the hutongs around Nanluoguxiang. The district runs from the central axis east to the 2nd Ring Road. This is where most first-time visitors stay. Average hotel prices: 600-1,500 CNY ($83-$207) for 4-star, 200-400 CNY ($28-$55) for budget options.
Subway: Lines 1, 2, 5, 6, 8 serve the district. Dongcheng suits travelers who want to walk to major sights and don’t mind paying more for location. The downside is higher prices and crowds around Wangfujing.
Xicheng District: Parks and Local Life
Xicheng covers the area west of the central axis including Beihai Park, Houhai Lakes, the Beijing Zoo, and the Financial Street business district. The Shichahai area (Houhai, Qianhai, Xihai lakes) is the standout neighborhood with lakeside bars, restaurants, and hutong alleyways.
Hotel prices are slightly lower than Dongcheng: 500-1,000 CNY ($69-$138) for mid-range. Subway Lines 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 13 serve Xicheng. Best for travelers who want parks, nightlife around Houhai, and a more local atmosphere than Dongcheng. The lakeside area gets loud on weekend nights.
Chaoyang District: Business, Dining, and Nightlife
Chaoyang is Beijing’s modern face, stretching from the 2nd to 5th Ring Road in the east. It contains the CBD (Central Business District), Sanlitun bar street, 798 Art District, and most foreign embassies. Sanlitun is the expat and nightlife hub with bars, clubs, and international restaurants along Sanlitun Bar Street and Taikoo Li shopping complex.
Hotel prices: 800-2,500 CNY ($110-$345) for business hotels in CBD, 400-800 CNY ($55-$110) near Sanlitun. Subway Lines 1, 6, 10, 14, and the Airport Express serve Chaoyang. Best for business travelers, nightlife seekers, and repeat visitors who don’t need to be next to historic sites. The downside is 30-45 minute subway rides to major attractions.
Haidian District: University Area and Tech Hub
Haidian in northwest Beijing is home to Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Zhongguancun (China’s Silicon Valley). The Summer Palace and Yuanmingyuan are in Haidian. Hotel prices are lower: 300-700 CNY ($41-$97) for good mid-range options. Subway Lines 4, 10, 13, 16 serve the district. Best for university visitors, tech business travelers, and budget-conscious tourists willing to commute 40-60 minutes to central sights. The student-heavy Wudaokou area has cheap eats and bars.
Dongzhimen and Embassy Area
Dongzhimen in northeast Dongcheng borders the embassy district. The area around Dongzhimen station is a transport hub with the Airport Express (25 CNY, 20 minutes to PEK). The Ghost Street (Guijie) on Dongzhimen Inner Street has 100+ restaurants serving Sichuan and Beijing cuisine until 4 AM. Hotel prices: 500-1,200 CNY ($69-$166).
This area works well for travelers who want airport access, 24-hour dining, and a short subway ride to central sights. The where to stay in Beijing guide lists specific hotels in each area.
Xuanwu District (Southern Old City)
The former Xuanwu District (now part of Xicheng) covers the area south of Qianmen around the Temple of Heaven, Niujie Mosque, and the Liulichang antiques street. This is traditional working-class Beijing with fewer tourists. Budget hotels cluster near Beijing South Railway Station: 150-350 CNY ($21-$48). The area has some of Beijing’s best traditional snack streets. Subway Lines 4, 7, 14 serve the area. Best for budget travelers and those interested in Beijing’s Muslim quarter around Niujie.
