Kunming

Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province in southwestern China, is known as the “City of Eternal Spring” for its year-round mild climate. At 1,890 metres (6,200 feet) above sea level, the city enjoys a subtropical highland climate with average daytime temperatures ranging from 15C (59F) in winter to 24C (75F) in summer. Unlike most of China, Kunming has no bitter winters or oppressive summers. The trade-off is a distinct wet season from June through September when the southwest monsoon delivers 80% of the annual 1,000mm (39 inches) of rainfall, mostly as afternoon downpours.

• Winter (December to February): Cool and dry. Daytime highs 15 to 17C (59 to 63F), nighttime lows 3 to 5C (37 to 41F). Minimal rain (16 to 18mm per month). Black-headed gulls winter on Green Lake. Lowest hotel rates except during Chinese New Year.
