Welcome to Jiuzhaigou
Jiuzhaigou means valley of nine villages in Tibetan, named for the nine settlements scattered through its three branches. The lakes get their electric blue and green from calcium carbonate and mineral deposits in the water, and the valley was shaped by glaciers and earthquakes, the most recent being the magnitude 7.0 quake in August 2017 that closed the park for repairs until it reopened fully in 2019. Today the shuttle system runs the full 60 km of roads, and the boardwalks and viewing platforms have been rebuilt, so the post-quake park is more visitor-ready than ever.
