Pingyao Weather by Month: Winter (December to February)
Winter in Pingyao is cold and dry. January lows average -10°C (14°F) and daytime highs rarely exceed 2°C (36°F). Snowfall is light, about 5-8cm total across the season, but the dry air and coal-heated buildings create a distinctive haze that can limit visibility. The ancient city looks atmospheric under a dusting of snow, especially around Chinese New Year when red lanterns line Ming-Qing Street. Pack thermal layers, a heavy coat, gloves, and a hat. Indoor heating in historic courtyard guesthouses can be inconsistent, ask about heating type when booking. The upside: hotel rates drop 40-50% from peak season and you’ll have the city walls nearly to yourself.

Spring warms up rapidly. March starts chilly at 12°C (54°F) but by May daytime temperatures reach 26°C (79°F). The main drawback is dust storms, Shanxi sits on the Loess Plateau and spring winds kick up fine yellow dust from the Gobi Desert, particularly in March and April. Bring sunglasses and a face mask if you’re sensitive. By late April, the dust settles and temperatures settle into a comfortable 20-25°C (68-77°F) range. This is one of the best windows for photography, clear skies, blossoming trees in the temple courtyards, and moderate visitor numbers before the summer crowds arrive.

Summer brings heat and humidity. July is the hottest and wettest month: 31°C (88°F) highs, 115mm of rain across 12 days, and 72% humidity. The stone-paved streets inside the ancient city absorb and radiate heat, making midday walking uncomfortable. Rain typically falls as short, heavy thunderstorms in the late afternoon. Umbrellas are essential, both for rain and sun. July and August are Chinese school holidays, so domestic tourism peaks: expect crowded attractions, long queues at Rishengchang, and hotel rates 30-50% above shoulder season. If visiting in summer, start sightseeing by 8 AM to beat both the heat and the tour groups.
Pingyao Weather by Month: Autumn (September to November)
Autumn is Pingyao’s best season. September and October bring blue skies, daytime temperatures of 18-24°C (64-75°F), low humidity, and almost no rain after mid-September. The Pingyao International Photography Festival runs in September, filling the city’s courtyards and former factory spaces with exhibitions. By November, temperatures drop to 9°C (48°F) highs and nights dip below freezing, but the crisp air and golden light on the grey-brick architecture make it a favourite for photographers.
