Best Neighborhoods in Datong: Central and Historic
Datong Old City
The walled old city, roughly 2.6km on each side, contains Huayan Monastery, Shanhua Monastery, the Nine Dragon Screen and the Drum Tower. Streets have been rebuilt in Ming style and are pedestrian-friendly in the core. It suits first-time sightseers who want to walk between the main temples listed in our things to do in Datong guide. Pingcheng District
The modern downtown ring around the old city is Datong’s commercial centre, with Wanda Plaza, chain restaurants and the densest hotel supply. It suits business travellers and anyone who wants an easy, predictable base with taxis on every corner. Mid-range hotels run 200 to 400 RMB a night, and the international-brand properties sit here. Best Neighborhoods in Datong: Newer and Outer Areas
Datong South Railway Station Area
Around Datong South station, about 8km south of the old city, this newer zone is where high-speed rail arrivals from Beijing and Taiyuan land. Hotels skew toward newer mid-range and budget brands at 150 to 300 RMB a night. It is a 20 to 30 minute taxi ride from the Yungang Grottoes.
Yungang District
The district around the Yungang Grottoes, about 16km west of the centre, mixes mining heritage with visitor infrastructure.
