Sanya’s event calendar mixes Chinese national holidays, Hainan-specific cultural festivals, and international events that draw visitors from across Asia. For more context, read our Sanya weather by month guide. Most festivals follow the lunar calendar so dates shift annually , check exact dates before booking flights.

Sanya Events and Festivals: Chinese New Year (Spring Festival)

Chinese New Year, falling in late January or February, is Sanya’s biggest event of the year and the peak of peak season. For more context, read our best time to visit Sanya guide. The city decorates with red lanterns, hosts night markets, and puts on fireworks displays at Sanya Bay and Dadonghai. Nanshan Temple attracts thousands of worshippers for the first incense offering of the new year. Hotels are at 95-100% occupancy with 3-5 night minimum stays and rates 2-3x normal. If you want to experience Chinese New Year in Sanya, book by October. If you want to avoid it, check the lunar calendar and stay away from the 7-day holiday window.

Sanya Events and Festivals: Sanya Boat Festival (April)

Launched in 2025, the Sanya Boat Festival runs for 4 days in mid-April at the Sanya Serenity Marina. For more context, read our things to do in Sanya guide. The event features yacht displays, sailing regattas, water sports demonstrations, and a marine industry expo. Attendance has been growing and it is positioning Hainan as a yachting hub under China’s free-trade port policy. Most events are free to attend for marina visitors. The marina is in the Luhuitou area, reachable by bus 3 or Didi.

Sanya Events and Festivals: Dragon Boat Festival (June)

The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, typically in June. For more context, read our best neighborhoods in Sanya guide. In Sanya, dragon boat races take place at Sanya River and occasionally at Haitang Bay. Teams of 20-30 paddlers race in long, narrow boats decorated with dragon heads and tails to the beat of a drummer. The festival also involves eating zongzi (sticky rice wrapped in bamboo leaves) and hanging mugwort for good luck. This is a public holiday in China, so domestic tourism spikes, though not to Chinese New Year levels. Sanya Bay’s waterfront is the best place to watch the races.

Sanya Events and Festivals: Hainan International Tourism Carnival (August)

Running through most of August, this island-wide carnival has its biggest events in Sanya, particularly at the Yucai Ecological Zone and scenic districts. For more context, read our where to stay in Sanya guide. Programming includes beach concerts, food festivals featuring Hainanese cuisine (Wenchang chicken, Dongshan lamb, Jiaji duck, Hele crab), light shows, and cultural performances highlighting the Li and Miao ethnic minorities. Most outdoor events are free. The carnival is an attempt to boost tourism during the wet-season low point, so expect humidity and potential rain alongside the festivities.

Sanya Events and Festivals: Mid-Autumn Festival (September)

Held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, typically in September, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a family-oriented holiday centered on moon-viewing and eating mooncakes. For more context, read our Sanya travel tips guide. In Sanya, the beach areas and Luhuitou Park are popular spots for moon-viewing parties. Hotels host special dinners and lantern displays. It is a 3-day public holiday that drives moderate domestic tourism. Book 2-3 weeks ahead.

Sanya Events and Festivals: Golden Week (October 1-7)

China’s National Day Golden Week brings the year’s second-largest domestic tourism wave to Sanya. Check the full Sanya city guide for an overview of the city. Expect crowded beaches, fully booked hotels, and higher prices across the board. The trade-off: the weather is transitioning from wet to dry season, so October days are often beautiful. The city typically organizes special events including military band performances, flag-raising ceremonies, and evening galas. If visiting during Golden Week, book 2-3 months ahead and accept that you will share the city with several hundred thousand other travelers.

Sanya Events and Festivals: Sanya International Music Festival (November-December)

Held since 2018, this multi-day music festival typically takes place in November or December at venues around Sanya Bay and Haitang Bay. Past lineups have included Chinese pop stars, international DJs, and classical orchestras. The festival was suspended during COVID and has been rebuilding its program since 2024. Check the Sanya Tourism Board website for exact dates and ticket information. Day passes typically run CNY 300-800 depending on the lineup.
