Yangshuo is a small county town, and its “neighborhoods” are really distinct zones spread along the Li and Yulong rivers. Where you stay decides whether you walk to the bars of West Street or wake up to rice fields and peaks. This guide breaks down the four main areas with what each one suits, and the best time to visit Yangshuo page helps you time the visit.

Yangshuo Neighborhoods: West Street and the Town Center

West Street (Xi Jie)

West Street is the 500-metre pedestrian lane that anchors nightlife, dining and shopping, with beer fish restaurants and bars running late every night. It suits first-time visitors and younger travelers who want to step out of their hotel into the action and be near the things to do in Yangshuo that run through town. Rooms here are small and can be noisy until midnight; budget guesthouses run CNY 150 to 400 a night.

Town Center and Pantao Road

A few blocks off West Street, around Pantao Road and the bus station, sit the larger hotels, banks and travel agencies. This is the most convenient base for day trips because the bus station, bike rental shops and tour offices are all within a 10 minute walk. Prices run slightly higher than the back lanes, typically CNY 250 to 600 a night for a mid-range room.

Yangshuo Neighborhoods: Yulong River Valley

Yulong River South

The valley south of town along the Yulong River is where the bamboo rafts launch and where the quieter boutique hotels and resorts sit among the fields. It suits couples and anyone who wants peace, a pool and a karst view rather than nightlife. Riverside resorts here start around CNY 400 a night and climb well past CNY 1,000 for the top properties.

The Ten-Mile Gallery is the scenic road running south past Moon Hill and the Big Banyan Tree, and it doubles as a lodging zone with farmstays and a few design hotels. It is the best base for cyclists and rock climbers, with easy access to the climbing cliffs and a flat ride into town. Expect CNY 300 to 700 a night, and the area fills up around the Yangshuo events and festivals like the October climbing festival.

Yangshuo Neighborhoods: Across the Li River

Xingping

Xingping, about 28 km (17 mi) upriver, is the small, 1,740-year-old town next to the 20 yuan viewpoint. It is the base for photographers chasing the sunrise at Xianggong Hill and Laozhai Mountain, and it is far calmer than Yangshuo at night. Guesthouses run CNY 100 to 300, but dining options are limited after dark.

Fuli Town

Fuli, about 8 km (5 mi) east of town, is a 1,000-year-old market town known for painted fans (huashan) and paper crafts. It is the location of the Banyan Tree Yangshuo resort and suits travelers who want a luxury rural retreat with a short drive to the sights.
