Shenzhen’s festival calendar is a mix of national Chinese holidays, trade fairs, and modern cultural events. The city’s young demographic (average age 33) and proximity to Hong Kong shape a contemporary event scene alongside traditional observances. Here is what fills the calendar.
Shenzhen Events and Festivals Calendar
Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) – Late January to Mid-February
Chinese New Year (Chun Jie) follows the lunar calendar and falls between January 21 and February 20. In Shenzhen, the city empties as millions of migrant workers return to their hometowns. The Flower Market on Aiguo Road in Luohu District runs for a week before New Year’s Eve, selling kumquat trees, orchids, and peonies (symbolizing luck and prosperity). On New Year’s Eve, fireworks displays happen at Lianhuashan Park and Shenzhen Bay Park. Window of the World and Splendid China host special CNY evening shows with lantern festivals and fireworks. Most small restaurants and shops close for 3 to 7 days. Malls and theme parks remain open. The weather during CNY averages 13°C to 19°C (55°F to 66°F) with moderate humidity.
Shenzhen Hi-Tech Fair (CHTF) – Mid-November
The China Hi-Tech Fair runs for five days in mid-November at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center in Futian District (Fuhua Third Road). It is China’s largest technology trade fair with 3,000+ exhibitors from 40+ countries and 500,000+ visitors. Fields covered include AI, 5G, semiconductors, smart cities, and green tech. The fair is primarily for industry professionals but has public days on the final two days. Entry: 50 CNY for the public. Registration opens online in October. Metro: Convention and Exhibition Center station (Lines 1 and 4). Hotel prices in Futian spike during the fair, book 4 to 6 weeks ahead.
Dragon Boat Festival – June (5th Day of 5th Lunar Month)
The Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Jie) brings dragon boat races to Shenzhen’s waterfronts. The main races happen at Dameisha Beach in Yantian District and on the Maozhou River in Baoan District. Races start around 9am and continue through the afternoon. The festival also means zongzi (sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves), available at every supermarket and restaurant. The date shifts each year but falls in June. This is a three-day public holiday in China. Expect crowded beaches and parks. The June weather is hot (31°C / 88°F) and rainy (360mm), so races are sometimes postponed by thunderstorms.
Mid-Autumn Festival – September/October (15th Day of 8th Lunar Month)
The Mid-Autumn Festival (Zhongqiu Jie) falls in September or October on the full moon. Lianhuashan Park in Futian and Shenzhen Bay Park host lantern displays with hundreds of illuminated installations. Families gather to eat mooncakes, sold everywhere from supermarket chains to luxury hotel bakeries. The festival is a three-day public holiday. The lantern displays at Lianhuashan run for about a week around the festival date. The October weather is among Shenzhen’s best (23°C to 28°C, 72% humidity, 80mm rain).
Shenzhen International Cultural Industries Fair (ICIF) – May
The ICIF runs for five days in mid-May at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center with satellite venues across the city including Dafen Oil Painting Village and OCT Loft. It covers publishing, film, animation, design, crafts, and cultural tourism with 2,000+ exhibitors. Public entry on the final two days: 50 CNY. The Dafen satellite venue has live painting demonstrations and the OCT Loft hosts concurrent design exhibitions. This is primarily a trade fair but the public days at Dafen and OCT are worthwhile for art buyers.
Shenzhen Fashion Week – March/April and October
Shenzhen Fashion Week runs twice yearly in March/April (Autumn/Winter collections) and October (Spring/Summer collections). The main venue is the Shenzhen MixC World complex in Nanshan with shows at the MixC Theatre and pop-up events throughout the shopping center. Shenzhen’s fashion industry produces 60% of China’s women’s wear, and the show features 200+ Chinese designers. Tickets for individual shows are 200 to 500 CNY. The surrounding OCT area hosts concurrent showroom events open to the public at OCT Loft galleries.
Shenzhen Cartoon and Animation Festival – July
Held in late July at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center, this five-day festival is China’s second-largest anime and animation event. It features cosplay competitions, esports tournaments, animation screenings, and merchandise from Japanese anime, Chinese donghua, and gaming franchises. Entry: 60 to 80 CNY. The cosplay competition finals on day three draw the largest crowds. It is popular with Shenzhen’s young tech workforce. Book tickets via Damai.cn or at the venue.
