Xiamen sits on China’s southeastern coast in Fujian province, a subtropical island city facing Taiwan across the Taiwan Strait. The city averages 21°C (70°F) annually with mild winters (January lows of 10°C/50°F) and hot, humid summers (July highs of 33°C/91°F). About 1,350mm (53 inches) of rain falls each year, concentrated from March through September with a typhoon season peaking in August. The best months to visit are October and November, when temperatures hold at 21-27°C (70-81°F), rainfall drops to 40-50mm, and humidity falls to a comfortable 68-70%. Xiamen’s compact layout puts most attractions within Siming District, with UNESCO-listed Gulangyu Island just a 5-minute ferry ride away. The city ranks among China’s most livable, with clean air, extensive cycling paths, and a food scene anchored by shacha noodles and fresh seafood.

Welcome to Xiamen

Xiamen occupies a unique position in China: a former treaty port with European colonial architecture on car-free Gulangyu Island, a city whose diaspora built fortunes across Southeast Asia and returned to fund universities and gardens, and one of China’s most pleasant urban environments. The air is cleaner than Beijing or Shanghai, the pace slower, and the 31km Island Ring Road gives the city a resort-like feel along its southern coast. Xiamen was the departure point for generations of Fujianese emigrants who settled in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. That overseas-Chinese connection, known locally as the huaqiao (overseas Chinese) legacy, funded institutions like Xiamen University and Jimei School Village, both founded by rubber tycoon Tan Kah Kee in the early 20th century. Today Xiamen balances its historic lanes and temples with modern shopping malls, a growing tech sector, and increasing international tourism driven largely by Gulangyu’s 2017 UNESCO World Heritage designation.

Weather at a Glance

Xiamen has a subtropical monsoon climate. Winters (December-February) are mild: daytime highs of 18-20°C (64-68°F), overnight lows of 10-12°C (50-54°F), and just 30-85mm of rain per month. Snow is virtually unknown. Spring (March-May) warms from 21°C to 29°C (70-84°F) with increasing humidity and the onset of the plum rain (meiyu) in May. Summer (June-September) is hot and wet: 31-33°C (88-91°F) highs, humidity above 80%, and 135-210mm of monthly rainfall. Typhoons can strike July through September, with August historically the highest-risk month. Autumn (October-November) is Xiamen’s sweet spot: 24-27°C (75-81°F), 40-50mm of rain, clear skies, and humidity as low as 68%. Sea temperatures range from 15°C (59°F) in January to 28°C (82°F) in July and August.

Where to Stay in Xiamen

Xiamen’s accommodation splits across three main areas. Siming District on Xiamen Island is the most convenient base, putting you within walking distance of Zhongshan Road, the Gulangyu ferry terminal, Nanputuo Temple, and the best restaurants. Hotels here range from international luxury chains (Conrad, Kempinski, Pan Pacific) to budget-friendly Chinese chains. Gulangyu Island offers the most atmospheric overnight experience in converted colonial villas, but ferry logistics mean you’re committed to a 20-minute boat ride for mainland access each day. Jimei District on the mainland (connected by Metro Line 1, 15 minutes to downtown) delivers the best value at roughly half the price of comparable Siming hotels, with a student-town vibe from Jimei University’s 30,000 students.
