Santos is Brazil’s great coffee port turned beach city, stretched along a 5.3 km beachfront garden on the Atlantic coast of Sao Paulo state, about 70 km from Sao Paulo city. The climate is warm and humid all year, averaging 23°C (73°F), with about 2,000 mm of rain spread across every month and sea temperatures that stay between 20°C (68°F) in winter and 26°C (79°F) in summer. It is the hometown of Pele, home to the world’s largest beachfront garden and the gateway to the Port of Santos, the biggest in Latin America. Use this Santos travel guide to plan around the weather, the beaches and the hotels.

Welcome to Santos

Santos works as a weekend escape from Sao Paulo and as a standalone coastal stop on a longer Brazil trip. The beach runs in seven named stretches from Jose Menino to Ponta da Praia, backed by a single garden path that holds a Guinness World Record, and the compact historic centre packs the Coffee Museum, the Monte Serrat funicular and Pele’s Vila Belmiro stadium into a few walkable blocks. Inland from the sand you get real working-port grit, and out on the water you can catch the 10-minute ferry to Guaruja in minutes. It is a place that rewards a relaxed, beach-first pace rather than a checklist sprint.

Santos Weather at a Glance

Santos has a tropical climate with no true dry season, so it never gets cold and it never fully dries out. The warmest month is February, averaging 28.5°C (83°F), and the coolest is July, averaging 16.9°C (62°F). Annual rainfall runs about 2,000 mm, with January the wettest at roughly 310 mm and August the driest at about 90 mm. Humidity hovers near 81% all year, which is what makes summer afternoons feel heavy and winter days feel mild.

Rain is the main thing to plan around. In summer (December to March) it falls as short, intense afternoon downpours, so mornings are usually clear. In winter (June to August) cold fronts from the south bring cooler, drizzlier stretches, but the sun still comes out on most days. The sea stays swimmable every month, which is why Santos works as a beach destination in all four seasons.

Santos Seasonal Snapshot

  • Summer (December to March): hot and humid, highs of 28 to 29°C (82 to 84°F), heavy afternoon rain and the warmest sea at 26°C (79°F). Peak crowds and prices, plus Carnival.
  • Autumn (April to June): mild and drier, highs of 23 to 26°C (73 to 79°F), rain easing to about 90 to 140 mm a month. The best balance of comfort, price and empty beaches.
  • Winter (July to September): the coolest stretch, highs of 22 to 23°C (72 to 73°F) and lows near 17°C (63°F), the driest months at about 90 mm. The Santos Jazz Festival and the Monte Serrat feast fall here.
  • Spring (October to November): warming up, highs of 24 to 26°C (75 to 79°F) and rain climbing back to 150 to 160 mm. Warm sea and uncrowded beaches before the summer rush.

Location and What Shapes Santos Weather

Santos sits on a coastal plain backed by the Serra do Mar escarpment, which climbs steeply just inland toward Sao Paulo city. That wall of hills forces moist Atlantic air upward and helps drive the heavy summer rainfall, while the ocean keeps temperatures mild in winter. The Tropic of Capricorn passes just south of the city, placing Santos on the edge of the tropical and subtropical zones, which is why it stays warm year round without the extreme heat of Brazil’s north. The port and the estuary add a cooling sea breeze in the afternoons.
