Natal’s biggest party is not Carnival but Carnatal, an off-season carnival held in early December that draws hundreds of thousands of people. The calendar also includes a strong São João season in June, a religious festival in July, and a Christmas light season that leans into the city’s name, since natal means Christmas in Portuguese. Here are the main events and festivals in Natal by season.

Events and Festivals in Natal: December to February

Carnatal (early December)

Carnatal is the largest micareta, or off-season carnival, in Brazil. It runs over the second weekend of December, typically Thursday to Saturday around the Arena das Dunas stadium, with 2025 dates of December 4 to 6. Massive trio elétrico trucks fitted with stages and sound systems parade slowly along a closed circuit while crowds follow in abadás, the themed shirts that serve as entry tickets. Single-day abadás start around R$200 to R$300 and give access to the arena area. Book accommodation early, because the where to stay in Natal options fill months in advance.

New Year’s Eve (Réveillon)

December 31 brings fireworks along Ponta Negra beach and hotel parties across the city. The beach fills from early evening, and many waterfront restaurants sell dinner packages for R$200 to R$500 per person. It is a family-friendly alternative to Rio’s Copacabana and needs no ticket for the beach itself, and the Natal neighborhoods guide points out the best viewpoints.

Carnival (February or March)

Natal’s Carnival, held in February or March depending on the year, is smaller than Rio’s or Recife’s but livelier than you might expect. The centre hosts blocos, street bands that parade with drummers, plus the mela-mela tradition where revellers throw water, paint and flour at each other. Most events are free and centred on the historic centre and beachfront, and the Natal travel tips article covers how to get around safely at night.

Events and Festivals in Natal: June to July

São João (June)

June is festa junina month across Brazil’s northeast. In Natal and the surrounding towns, squares fill with forró dancing, bonfires and stalls selling corn-based food such as canjica, pamonha and milho assado. The biggest celebrations run around June 23 and 24, the eve and day of Saint John, with free stages in most neighbourhoods and ticketed shows at venues such as the Centro de Convenções.

Festa de Sant’Ana (late July)

Sant’Ana, the patron saint of Natal, is honoured in a novena and procession in the last weeks of July, with the main feast day around July 26. The religious core is at the Santuário de Sant’Ana in the Redinha area, accompanied by street stalls, food and live music. It is a local, traditional event rather than a tourist spectacle, and it pairs well with a visit to the things to do in Natal in the historic centre.

Events and Festivals in Natal: September to December

Natal Luz and the Christmas Season

Because the city is named Christmas, the end of the year is marketed as Natal Luz, with light displays, a decorated tree and concerts from late November through December. The Árvore de Mirassol, a large Christmas tree in the Mirassol area, is switched on in early December, and Praça da Árvore hosts nightly performances. Everything is free and outdoors, and it coincides with the dry season, so it pairs naturally with the best time to visit Natal window.
