The best time to visit Olinda is September to February, when rainfall drops to 34 to 71 mm a month and sunshine climbs to 7 or 8 hours a day. The single worst time is the May-to-July rainy stretch, when the city receives 154 to 171 mm a month and the cobblestone ladeiras turn slippery. This guide lays out the exact months for good weather, lower prices, smaller crowds, and the festivals worth planning around. See our Olinda guide for more. Best Time to Visit Olinda for Weather

September, October, and November are the best months for a first visit. November averages 34 mm of rain and 28°C (82°F) highs, with sea temperatures at 27°C (81°F). December and January are almost as dry and slightly warmer at 29°C (84°F), but they also bring Brazilian school holidays, so beaches fill up. If you want the beach without the rain, book between September and December. See our Olinda weather by month guide for more.

Best Time to Visit Olinda for Carnival

Olinda’s Carnival is one of Brazil’s best, and it is a free street party unlike the ticketed Sambadrome shows in Rio. In 2027 it runs from Saturday 6 February to Tuesday 9 February, with the Homem da Meia-Noite giant puppet opening the party at midnight and the Encontro dos Bonecos Gigantes closing it on Tuesday morning at 10:00. Book hotels 6 to 12 months ahead, because the historic center sells out and rates double or triple for the week. See our things to do in Olinda guide for more.

Best Time to Visit Olinda for Fewer Crowds

May and June have the fewest tourists because of the rain, but you trade quiet streets for daily downpours. A better compromise is late February through April, after Carnival, when the weather is still warm and the historic center empties out. Weekdays are always calmer than weekends, when day-trippers arrive from Recife. See our events and festivals in Olinda guide for more.

Best Time to Visit Olinda for Lower Prices

Hotel rates are lowest from March to June, outside Carnival and the summer holidays. A mid-range pousada in the historic center that costs around R$ 400 to R$ 600 a night in high season often drops to R$ 250 to R$ 350 in the shoulder months. Avoid the week of Carnival, the December-to-January school holidays, and the São João festival week in late June if you are watching your budget. See our Olinda neighborhoods guide for more.

Best Time to Visit Olinda: Months to Avoid

Skip May, June, and July if you can. June alone brings 171 mm of rain and the highest chance of multiple wet days in a row. The streets of the Cidade Alta flood quickly in heavy showers, and the sea can be rough with bigger swells. July has the coolest temperatures at 26°C (79°F) but still 154 mm of rain, so it is not the beach escape many visitors expect. See our where to stay in Olinda guide for more.
