The best time to visit ouro preto is during the dry season from April to September, when clear skies and mild days make walking the steep cobblestone streets comfortable, and the July Winter Festival fills the town with concerts. The wettest and busiest stretch is December through February, when Carnival crowds and daily thunderstorms overlap. This guide gives you exact date ranges for good weather, lower prices, and the biggest events so you can match your trip to what you want to see. For the month-by-month temperatures and rainfall, see our Ouro Preto weather by month guide. For practical planning advice, see our Ouro Preto travel tips guide.
Best Time to Visit Ouro Preto for Weather
April through September is the driest and most pleasant window. Rainfall bottoms out at 15 to 40 mm per month from May to August, humidity drops to 55 to 65 percent, and daytime highs sit at 22 to 25°C (72 to 77°F). June and July nights get cold at 9 to 10°C (48 to 50°F), so you will want a jacket after sunset, but the days are ideal for sightseeing. If you want warm weather without heavy rain, aim for April or September, both shoulder months with 60 to 80 mm of rain and highs around 25°C. For the top sights and ticket prices, see our things to do in Ouro Preto guide. For the full town overview, see our Ouro Preto travel guide.
Best Time to Visit Ouro Preto for Festivals
Carnival (late February or early March) is the single biggest event, when the historic university city runs more than 80 street blocos and student republic parties over five days. Holy Week (Semana Santa), tied to Easter in March or April, is the most visually striking religious festival, with sawdust and flower carpets laid across the streets for processions. The Winter Festival (Festival de Inverno de Ouro Preto e Mariana) runs through most of July with concerts, theater, and art exhibitions across both towns. Check our events and festivals in Ouro Preto guide for the full calendar before you lock in dates.
Best Time to Visit Ouro Preto for Fewer Crowds
March through May and August through September are the quietest months. After Carnival ends, hotel prices fall 20 to 30 percent and the churches and museums have almost no queues. Weekdays in any month are far calmer than weekends, when day-trippers from Belo Horizonte (98 km away) pack Praça Tiradentes. Avoid the whole month of July on weekends if you dislike crowds, since the Winter Festival draws the biggest domestic visitor numbers of the year. Best Time to Visit Ouro Preto: Months to Avoid
December and January are the hardest months to travel here. Rainfall peaks at 250 to 280 mm and falls on about 22 days each month, mostly as afternoon storms that can flood the lower streets and make the hillside cobblestones slippery. January also coincides with Brazilian school holidays, so domestic families fill the hotels and prices rise. February is a trade-off: it is still rainy at 200 mm, but Carnival is worth the inconvenience if you plan around the storms and book lodging two or three months ahead. For hotel recommendations by area, see our where to stay in Ouro Preto guide.
