Manaus is the capital of Amazonas state and the largest city in the Brazilian Amazon, sitting at the confluence of the Rio Negro and Rio Solimoes where they form the Amazon River proper. Location and Climate Context
Manaus sits at 3 degrees 6 minutes south latitude, roughly 1,500km (930 miles) inland from the Atlantic coast, deep in the Amazon basin. The city is surrounded by rainforest on all sides: there are no roads connecting Manaus to the rest of Brazil. The only ways in are by air or by river boat (a 4-5 day journey from Belem at the Amazon’s mouth). This geographic isolation explains why Manaus developed as a distinct urban island in the rainforest, with a unique culture blending indigenous Amazonian, Portuguese colonial, and rubber-boom European influences. The equatorial location means the sun is overhead twice a year (late March and mid-September), and day length varies by only about 20 minutes across the entire year: roughly 12 hours of daylight every day.
The climate is dominated by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), a band of convective thunderstorms that migrates north and south of the equator with the seasons. When the ITCZ passes directly over Manaus (March-April), rainfall peaks. The city also experiences friagem events: occasional cold fronts from the south that can push temperatures down to 18-20°C (64-68°F) for a day or two, usually between June and August. These are rare and brief but notable in a place where the normal low is 23°C (73°F).
