March hosts the Adelaide Festival, WOMADelaide world music Adelaide events and festivals, and the closing weeks of the Fringe. This is the busiest month of the year for events. Best Time for Beach Swimming
January and February. Sea temperatures peak at 22degC (72degF) and air temperatures average 29degC (84degF). Glenelg Beach is crowded on weekends but the 3 km stretch of sand handles it. Avoid midday (11 AM to 3 PM) when the UV index is extreme. Swim between the flags: Glenelg and Henley Beach are patrolled by surf lifesavers from November through March.
Best Time for Hiking and Outdoor Activities
April, May, September, and October. Temperatures of 19 to 22degC (66 to 72degF) are ideal for the Waterfall Gully to Mount Lofty summit trail (3.9 km return, 400 m elevation gain) and the River Torrens Linear Park trail (30 km total). Winter (June to August) hikes are possible but trails can be muddy and daylight is limited to roughly 10 hours.
