Port Douglas is a coastal town in Far North Queensland, Australia, about 60 km north of Cairns and the closest resort town to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. It has a tropical monsoon climate with a hot, wet season from November to April and a warm, dry season from May to October. July averages 25°C (77°F) with about 40 mm of rain, while January reaches 31°C (88°F) with 405 mm. Annual rainfall totals roughly 2,000 mm, almost all of it falling between December and March, and sea temperatures range from 23°C in winter to 29°C in summer.

Port Douglas grew from a gold-rush supply port founded in 1877 into a low-rise resort town of about 3,500 permanent residents. There are no high-rises here: a local building-height limit keeps every roofline below the palm canopy, which is why the town feels nothing like Cairns down the road. The geography does the heavy lifting, with Four Mile Beach on one side, the Coral Sea and outer reef to the east, and the Daintree and Mossman Gorge a short drive to the west. Most visitors use the town as a base for reef trips and rainforest day tours, and the compact village means you can walk from your hotel to the marina in under ten minutes.

The climate splits cleanly into two halves. Two seasonal hazards matter more than the rain. Marine stingers, box jellyfish and Irukandji, are present in coastal waters from November to May, so swimming outside the stinger nets is off the table in those months. Cyclones are possible from November to April, with the highest risk in January through March, and can pause reef tours for a few days at a time. The town has three base areas. Four Mile Beach holds the big resorts with direct sand access, Macrossan Street is the walkable village centre, and the fringe south of town has cheaper motor inns and nature lodges.
